An inspiring story of keeping the Christian faith, Mission Liberia offers support to evangelists around the world and is both encouraging and thoroughly entertaining. Dating back from the couple's arrival in 1991, it tells the joys and heartaches, successes and failures of a pioneer and his wife who arrived in Monrovia, Liberia, with just two suitcases and a cornet with which to commence their daunting work. Brian J. Knightley has written a nail-biting story that sheds light on a dark topic and inspires Christian readers to faithfully accept the challenge of God's work, though the way ahead may be difficult.

Church planting amidst civil war
By John Gibbs
When Brian and Dorothy Knightley were sent to take over leadership of the Salvation Army mission in Liberia in 1991, they were stepping into the middle of a civil war that still had many years to run. Their story is told in this book by Brian. The Salvation Army had first started work in the country some three years previously, and by the time the Knightleys left in 2004 numerous churches had been planted and several schools started.
While the Salvation Army is best known to outsiders for its work amongst the poor, this story is mainly about evangelism and church planting. There are some negative connotations to the "army" metaphor in a country where various rebel armies are fighting for dominance, but such problems were reduced when people came to understand what the Salvation Army stood for. It is interesting to observe how traditional Salvation Army outreach techniques - playing brass instruments, attracting a crowd, preaching outdoors - succeeded in the Liberian context.
The "business as usual" approach to church planting taken by the Knightleys whilst dodging rebel bullets seems extraordinary. They did have to evacuate in 1996 when rebel president Charles Taylor's men were systematically looting every house in their street and killing the inhabitants, although not before telephoning Charles Taylor and speaking to the man himself. Even after this horrific event, they could not wait to return and get on with the work.
The author is not a professional writer, but the book is not difficult to read. Although many may be attracted to read it because of the extraordinary circumstances occurring in Liberia, its true value lies in its description of a successful church planting movement.
