Life, Death, and Airplanes: A Memoir, by Larry Klos

Life, Death, and Airplanes is a memoir covering a portion of the author's life. Larry Klos lived as a child in a family with airplanes and as an adult has been a light aircraft pilot. He retired after a long career in the aircraft industry. Aircraft have always been part of his life and changed his life, most notably when a light aircraft crash killed his family, leaving him as the sole survivor. The memoir shares the details of his life as it was affected by aviation, and by the fact that he has an introverted personality type. Although introversion can be a strength as well as a weakness, in both cases it affects the way introverts approach the world and their relationships with others. The intersections of introversion and aviation are constant threads of thought in the narrative. All of us face our own difficulties and traumas as we move through life. The story is sad, but hopefully inspiring, showing how one person survived to live a fulfilled life despite difficult situations.

Rachel Brown
By Rachel Brown
I read the text as a required reading for a legal course in the Fraud and Forensic Science master's program at Carlow University. Prior to reading the text, the extent of my legal knowledge came from a few general business law courses taken in undergraduate school many moons ago. I found this particular text very easy to follow. The authors manage to pack in a great deal of significant information, rules, codes and laws pertinent to criminal evidence without being overbearing. The cases added throughout the chapters help put the laws into a realistic perspective; giving several examples of how the rule/law came to be and how it is used in current legal situations. Overall, the text was presented in a manageable format that would benefit a novelist or someone experienced in the legal field.

Written for the layman.
By John Boone
Probably the most easily understood textbook in any criminal evidence program. It is well written and packed full of relevant case law. An excellent addition to any criminal evidence text library. Plus, it is smaller in size than an average textbook. Thus, making it a little lighter and less cumbersome. Worth the price of a used copy.

Legal Elements of Fraud
By Inger Jensen
I am currently a student in Carlow University's MFF program. In the most recent course, Legal Elements of Fraud, we utilized the companion text entitled Criminal Evidence Principles and Cases by Gardner and Anderson (2013). Overall, the text is replete with case examples and comprehensive information on the origins of law, the development and processes of the U.S. judicial system, and the value behind collection of evidence. Equal consideration is given to the Constitutional rights and amendments that impact all U.S. citizens, especially in their interface with the criminal justice system.

I found this to be a very appropriate text for a novice practitioner entering the field of fraud. The material is comprehensible and the authors provided a relevant summary at the end of each chapter which well encapsulated the content. I found these especially helpful in trying to analyze complex legal cases. Relative to the forensic community, the text provided a unique frame of reference for both a beginning and a seasoned fraud investigator. The legal sections were well organized and relevant rules/processes were articulated. It appears mandatory for any fraud investigator to become renounced in the legal system.

Our class assignments were well complemented by the text, in particular the subjects of evidentiary rules, hearsay exceptions, the Fourth and Fifth Amendment protections, Federal Rules of Evidence and the legal requirements for search and seizure. Of particular note were the case law examples and seminal examples of federal and state cases that set precedence for legal statutes in use today.

The delineation of a glossary, case index and subject index were equally helpful in summarizing key concepts. I opted to rent the book for this course, but upon completion of this course, I intend to purchase it. I think it will be an invaluable reference as I embark upon a career in the Fraud field.

Great way to learn guitar
By Budd
I really like Justin's guitar songbooks and love his online videos (youtube). Thanks Justin! I would have given this 5 stars but think some of the instructions could be clearer, such as a better legend for some of the notations on his strums.

Justin is simply the best teacher
By Sean Hartley
This book is really well done. Awesome songs. The songs typically aren't all tabbed out, forcing you to do the work to get it sounding exactly like the original recordings. Justin's accompanying YouTube videos are awesome as well. I have this and two other of his books and I will own them forever.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. The experiences of a woman drawn into the 1971 Bangladesh war for independence illuminate the conflict's wider resonances in Anam's impressive debut, the first installment in a proposed trilogy. Rehana Haque is a widow and university student in Dhaka with two children, 17-year-old daughter Maya and 19-year-old son Soheil. As she follows the daily patterns of domesticity—cooking, visiting the cemetery, marking religious holidays—she is only dimly aware of the growing political unrest until Pakistani tanks arrive and the fighting begins. Suddenly, Rehana's family is in peril and her children become involved in the rebellion. The elegantly understated restraint with which Anam recounts ensuing events gives credibility to Rehana's evolution from a devoted mother to a woman who allows her son's guerrilla comrades to bury guns in her backyard and who shelters a Bengali army major after he is wounded. The reader takes the emotional journey from atmospheric scenes of the marketplace to the mayhem of invasion, the ruin of the city, evidence of the rape and torture of Hindus and Bengali nationalists, and the stench and squalor of a refugee camp. Rehana's metamorphosis encapsulates her country's tragedy and makes for an immersive, wrenching narrative. (Jan.)

From The New Yorker
In this striking dbut novel, set in the nineteen-seventies, a young widow and her children become caught up in Bangladesh’s war for independence. Rehana exists on the edge of things: a native of Calcutta, she was resettled in Dhaka by her husband and speaks Urdu, the language of West Pakistan, as fluently as Bengali, the language of restive East Pakistan—soon to be Bangladesh. Her children, though, are fervent patriots, joining in student marches and making speeches; as rhetoric becomes revolution, her son joins a guerrilla group and her daughter decamps to Calcutta to write tracts exposing the atrocities committed by the Pakistani Army. Anam deftly weaves the personal and the political, giving the terrors of war spare, powerful treatment while lyrically depicting the way in which the struggle for freedom allows Rehana to discover both her strength and her heart.

From Bookmarks Magazine
Tahmima Anam’s ambitious and powerful debut is the first novel in English to describe Bangladesh’s war for independence, a brutal conflict that left 3 million dead and 10 million homeless. Anam’s attempt to portray the violence and cruelty of political events through the personal experiences of a single family largely succeeds, but some critics felt that the two themes vied for dominance, creating a disjointed plot. While the Dallas Morning News found Anam’s characters flat, the San Jose Mercury News considered Rehana "a beautifully realized character." However, all the critics agreed on Anam’s lush, poetic language and vivid imagery. The first novel in a planned trilogy, A Golden Age will leave readers looking forward to the next installment.

Would make a great movie, destined to be a classic
By Clare Chu
War novels like Gone with the Wind, Sophie's Choice, The Book Thief to name a few, capture the stresses and choices that ordinary people are forced to make as the brutality and deprivation of war, occupation, captivity, that change the ordinary circumstances of life into a living nightmare. This book is no different.

The book starts with a prologue where the widow Rehana sits at her husband's grave and tells him that she has lost the children. Because of her poverty, her husband's brother and childless sister-in-law have taken custody of Sohail and Maya, Rehana's 7 and 5 year olds. Even though they are gone for only a year, Rehana feels in her heart the yearning gap of that year and devotes herself totally to her children.

Every year, they have a party where they celebrate the children's return. March 1971 was no different. The party had become a routine, the same guests, Rehana's neighbors, a tenant family from India, the gin-rummy ladies and her daughter's friend. They are celebrating and optimistic of the future. But within a few short weeks, tanks rolled into Dhaka, refugees start streaming out, massacres occur in the city, and her children are drawn into the resistance movement. Life is anything but ordinary when Rehana is drawn into the resistance by her son and daughter. Faced with her guilt at how she lost them for a short while when they were young, and the secret of how she was able to bring them back, Rehana goes along with their efforts, hiding guns and supplies in her home and harboring and caring for a wounded major that at first she regards as a nuisance.

She would like nothing better than to retreat into her routine, her shell, sitting at her late husband's grave and speaking to him, and lying to him and herself about the normalcy of her life, ignoring her daughter's cold shoulder and indifference, and her own guilt at the shameful acts she took to bring her children back. But as the weeks went by, taking care of the major who only greeted her with silent eyes, she begins to open up to him, telling him of her secrets, as if to atone for them and he silently bears her secrets for her.

The war tears Rehana's circle apart, lives tragically destroyed, destinies changed. Rehana meets her former tenant in a refugee camp, a walking shell, with nothing left inside her except sorrow, for the choice she made, she'll pay with tears the rest of her life.

At the end, Rehana herself makes a heartbreaking choice, and even though the war ends a few weeks later, there is no victory, only sorrow in Rehana's heart. As the rest of the city celebrates Rehana speaks to her dead husband, telling him that this time, she did not lose her children.

This is a very poignant novel with plenty of action, raw emotions, youthful enthusiasm, and the painful legacies of war, and the birth of a nation.

Fairly good story, but flawed writing
By Amazon Customer
A wealth of very talented authors such as Arundhati Roy, Monica Ali, and Jhumpa Lahiri have made South Asian women writers the hot ticket. This book, Tahmima Anam's A Golden Age, is one that follows in that wake. I feel Anam has some natural story-telling ability and will probably mature into an excellent novelist, but overall this work has a large number of weaknesses. While I often appreciate a novel that is written in simple language, Anam's book is often unpolished. The book is filled with awkward phrases and metaphors that don't work. ("the blood leaping in their skins" "He entered the room sleekly." "The weather was a gale in her stomach."). However, to Anam's credit, she does successfully weave in a motif of sugar imagery which felt interesting and original.

The book is also too short, a complaint I almost never make. But back story is ignored so that the reader doesn't feel the impact the characters do when a girl decides to marry someone besides the main character's son. We also can't experience much of what the main character goes through when she loses her children to her brother-in-law for a year as we are not exposed to the extent of her love for her kids until too far into the novel.

Descriptive detail is also spotty. The protagonist, Rehana, proclaims that Dhaka is her city and very much a part of her, yet we hardly get a picture of Dhaka at all. We know there's a university, a market, some slums near the main train station, a cricket stadium, a lot of rickshaws and not much else. And it is crucial to understand why Dhaka means so much when actually the main character is from Calcutta, her children are in Lahore, and her sisters are in Karachi. Their native language is Urdu. This is not a family that comes with generations of Bengali history or even years of fond memories. Why does Rehana need Dhaka and Bangladesh?

Sloppy editing also hurts this novel. It reads "Rehana opened the Holy Book" and later on the same page "Just as Rehana was about to open the Holy Book..." There are also too many instances where the author does not adequately explain Bengali or Urdu terms which will probably alienate many Western readers.

It's difficult to weave in a lot of character development, necessary back story, and rich setting and still have the pacing to get to the guns and explosions before page 60, but I suspect a more experienced author could have done it. The book does move along at a clip, and the author keeps tensions high, but it could have been so much more gripping had the author given us the means to care deeply about her characters.

a golden age
By mainlinebooker
In the beginning, I was frustrated that there was not a glossary for many of the Urdu words and expressions. This omission was an annoying distraction from the total experience. Emotionally, however, the simple prose builds gradually to a dramatic and poignant tension, necessitating the need to finish the book in the wee hours of the night.
After finishing the novel. I happened to hear the author on NPR noting that the main character, Rehama, was based on her own grandmother's experience and that one of the other main characters was her uncle. Her grandmother actually did hide the weapons at the house and was confronted by the Pakistani army at gunpoint as they were looking for her son. It would have been an added bonus to have included that information at the end, making this chilling and uplifting story all the more poignant.

Book clubs should love this book, not only for the exploration of the depths of a mother's love, but also for a fascinating historical and intimate look at Bangladesh's quest for independence.

Gloucestermas (Gloucesterman), by Jonathan Bayliss

Gloucestermas is the culmination of Jonathan Bayliss’s masterwork, GLOUCESTERMAN, a tetralogy reviewers have compared to the fiction of Sterne, Melville, Joyce, Broch, and Musil.

Like Gloucesterbook and Gloucestertide, this richly detailed, playful, and expansive novel is centered on the Atlantic Coast’s seaport “Dogtown” on “Cape Gloucester.” Rafe Opsimath and Caleb Karcist are now older, with new practical, social, and intellectual preoccupations in 1980s Dogtown. Woven into the narrative are the Cape Gloucester and Isle of Man of the 1920s, Dogtown legends and municipal affairs, the fate of the schooner Gloucesterman, the play The Tower of Gilgamesh, and a Court of Love. Expanding the network of friends, spouses, and lovers, new central characters are intertwined in the sprawling web of ideas, history, geography, responsibility, experience, conversation, and love that make GLOUCESTERMAN unique in the world of literature.

Gloucestermas may be enjoyed independently or alongside the previous novels in the GLOUCESTERMAN series, headed by Prologos and including Gloucesterbook and Gloucestertide.

Review
James Joyce gave us the living, breathing Dublin through the prism of myth; Jonathan Bayliss's counterfactual Gloucester is no less vital, and his understanding of local and national political life is equally profound. Though set in the recent past and brilliantly weaving together all the narrative threads of the earlier books, Gloucestermas projects the reader equally into the future, charting the progress of our civic and sensual lives and the life of the American novel itself. --Peter Anastas, author of numerous books including Broken Trip and Decline of Fishes

The world so vividly imagined in the earlier fiction of Jonathan Bayliss is brought here to a fully realized, fully rounded close.

Gloucestermas connects many of the disparate ideas developed in the other novels, deepens the story of Caleb Karcist in unexpected ways, and offers some of the most remarkable conversations in all of American fiction.

Jonathan Bayliss's fiction sets a standard for the novel of ideas that recalls the work of Herman Broch or Thomas Pynchon without the paranoia...

These are novels in which everything matters: party politics, Christianity, dogs, being a spouse or parent, business efficiency, love, dance, myth, sex, growing old and dying all pulled together by the special topos that is Gloucester, Massachusetts.

The action unfolds in a world that is at once recognizable but altered: Gloucester is called Dogtown, Boston is Botolph, Democrats and Republicans are Catholicrats and Protesticans. This re-naming bumps the real world off its foundation just a few inches, with the result that we see things from a sharper, more incisive perspective. Lying behind it all is the adumbration of an enormous system encompassing all art, science, and technology - a general theory of culture whose shape the main characters are in their various ways working toward discerning. These are novels that imagine what it might mean to live a genuinely human life, rooted in a particular place. They occupy a special place in literature. --Gary Grieve-Carlson, professor of English and author of Olson's Prose

Jonathan Bayliss (1926-2009) studied at Harvard, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and finished his A.B. at the University of California at Berkeley. While writing his four-volume series, the work of a lifetime, Bayliss earned his livelihood in positions involved with sales analysis, accounting controls, and management, beginning in 1950 at a Berkeley bookstore. In the 1960s, as controller at Gortons of Gloucester, the frozen-fish processor, he initiated the development of integrated business systems using the IBM 360 mainframe computer. He also supervised the design and construction of Gortons' modern headquarters in Gloucester. After leaving Gortons in 1972, he devoted the next five years to full-time writing. Later he worked for the City of Gloucester as an aide to the mayor and as city treasurer. In 1985 he resumed full-time writing. Bayliss was putting the finishing touches on his final novel when he died in Gloucester in 2009 at the age of 82.

Gloucestermas, Exasperating But Intriguing
By Richard Amero
Gloucesternas, A Novel That Vexes But Leaves Readers Thinking

Gloucestermas (Fontis Press, Westborough, Mass.,) Jonathan Bayliss culminating novel in his four-part series beginning with Prologos, Gloucesterbook, and Gloucestertide, was published in 2010, one year after Bayliss' death in 2009. Whether the novel was complete at the time of its publication is confusing as it bares the marks of unfinished composition, which either the author or the editor could have remedied. Characters that appear in previous novels appear in this novel or are referred to by name. As this is a late novel, it shows the effects of the author's declining libido. Taken as a whole it is a baffling mixture of autobiography and fiction, and is marked by an abundance of dimly defined characters and by haziness in plot development.

It is considered fashionable in some circles these days to consider random plot juxtapositions and contradictions in characterization to be the latest fad in experimental, sometimes called deconstructionist, fiction. As such the novel's disassembled and fragmented structure is supposed to be a harbinger of the novel as it is to be. If this be so, may the Deities help us for ramblings flow effortlessly from one character to another in what was in former times called "a stream of consciousness" but now might more appropriately be called "a stream of associations" Caleb, the protagonist, calls the perigrinetic musings Immediate Exclusive Consciousness (IEC).

By bringing so many of the characters in other parts of the series together in Dogtown (a pseudonym for Gloucester, Mass.) the plot strains credulity. It might be said that this isn't a realistic novel so the numerous interconnections, which frequently involve the exchange of husbands and wives, must be accepted on its own terms. It would not happen in a real world but in a work of fiction, fiction could be said by some (but not by me) to predominate.

As most of the characters are now quinquagenarians, sexagenarians, septuagenarians, and octogenarians, the Sumerian goddess of love Inana, has either abandoned her votaries or has acquired a new set, leaving the old to flounder in abstractions having to do with politics (Protesticans vs., Catholicrats), with the vagaries of art, and with manifestations of anthropology, geology, mathematics, metaphysics, mythology, and theology.

One of the more distressing parts of the novel is the way all the main characters seem to talk and think in the same language. Perhaps it is lingua franca in Gloucester that all seagulls are called "angels," but, in my youth, my peers had other less complimentary names. Characters are mostly matroons, which means they are outsiders who have come to settle in Dogwood because it radiates an uncontrollable magnetism. In one place, it is stated that natives go as far away from their collapsing town as they can, with Southern California in general and Hume (read the University of California at Berkeley) in particular functioning as a one-way street.

While the ruminations of the main characters, including an omniscient narrator, occupy most of the book, there is a curious kind of in-breeding among leads as their ruminations usually center around the same subject, such as the search for a father for Caleb Karcist on the part of his friends. Caleb, for his part, is mildly amused. Roughly the book breaks down into two orbits, the first concerns Mary Tremont (also known as Moira Trevisa), Caleb's mother. Around the celebration of Dogwood's annual Petrine (read Roman Catholic) celebration, Moira, as she was then known, had sex with three distinguished gentlemen who were respectively a successful acquirer of stocks who happens to be a Jew; a young officer in the U.S. Navy who is a blonde Celtic navy architect; and a soon-to-be ordained Tudor (read Episcopalian) priest who is something of a "holy ghost" with radical ideas about changing ecclesiastical rituals.

Why this question of fatherhood should be of such concern to Tessa Opsimath is a mystery, but, suffice it to say, she likes to solve the scandals of an associate who was born a bastard. For myself I regard Tessa as a tiresome busybody. At any rate she was a disciple of Auto Drang (Otto Rank) a prominent psychoanalyst and is, therefore, adept at probing hidden secrets. Tessa believes in "free will," and, supposedly, so did her mentor Auto Drang. "Free will" is a hidden motif in the novel that surfaces from time to time. Readers are advised to be on the alert for those occasions when it pokes its nose through the canvas.

Aside from Caleb, an introspective and scrawny bachelor with a penchant for geometric symbols, who is engaged in completing a dramatic version of the Sumerian tale of Gilgamesh, the two main characters that take up the bulk of the novel are Fayaway [Morgan] Gabriel and Finn Macdane. Their common topic of conversation in their pillow talk is Caleb. Midway in the novel all three of Caleb's possible fathers die and the story line shifts to Caleb's position as an assistant to the mayor of Dogwood. Caleb has evolved a theory of organization he calls Synectic Method of Diagnostic Correlation (SMDT). By applying this theory to the solution of practical problems he has become an efficiency expert who can expedite work, reduce expenditures, and get rid of surplus employees. Business machines made by OHM (IBM) make it possible for Caleb to demonstrate how his theory can be used to simplify actions. As the novel takes place during the years Roland Raygun (Ronald Reagan) was president, an era in which personal selfishness overcame aspirations for "the common good" Caleb does not grasp the importance of personal computers which were to make OHM punch cards obsolete.. Not surprisingly Caleb's reorganization schemes are not regarded with joy by corporate vice presidents or by legislators whose political futures are tied to special interests.

Gloucestermas is not for everyone. Since I am a transported native of Gloucester, Mass. I am able to locate most of the sites Bayliss describes, though in some cases I think he puts separate scenes into one place. A map of Dogtown would do much to clear up the confusion. I found the artificial names to be unnecessary though Bayliss may have thought his cognomens were cute, significant, or just inside jokes. His description of the inner harbor and the shoreline of Gloucester's downtown as seen from the Crow (Eastern) Point breakwater does not correspond to anything I saw from the same place, though Bayliss, as all-knowing narrator, says he used binoculars. At one point before his accidental death by a kilroy (in this case a refrigeration trailer), Ibi Roy, a mythological dog in earlier books, charges a sign with a picture of a cat on it. I find this to be unbelievable.

Bayliss has a curious way of trying to link Wellingborough Redburn (Herman Melville) to the narrative which I find difficult to accept. Most of this linkage is through the reminiscences or experience of anyone of the interchangeable characters. I prefer to call Liam Yeats by his real name. For most of the novel, William Butler Yeats was used as a prop without reference to his works; however, in a penultimate chapter an attempt is made to show how Yeat's use of geometric symbols was not as abstruse or as profound as those Caleb uses. (Three cheers then for the "Isorectotetrahedron" (IRTH) and the double-headed axe, which date from Sumerian times and, as far as I can see, appear to have the same functions as a scepter and mace.) As poetry, what Yeats did with his tower symbol, nature images, and personal conflicts, and with the attitudes of the oppressed people in Ireland were on a plane higher than the more prosaic Bayliss ever reaches. When he was not trying to be the conveyor of Universal Systems or a sub-optimizer of optimum ideas, I am sure Bayliss, or his fictional alter ego Caleb, was aware of this.) Another writer Bayliss makes much use of without explaining why is George Borrow, an unjustly-neglected 19th century writer of picaresque novels and translator of the English Bible, who along with Bayliss was of the Tudor (Episcopalian) persuasion and had a fondness for real gypsies (a name Bayliss attaches to free-loving female waifs.)

Bayliss abandons his staggering vocabulary, mostly made up of sesquipedalians of his own coinage, and his equally staggering collections of lists as he gets deeper into his novel. Could it be that these stylistic extravagances became as boring to the author as they eventually became to his readers?

As a Gloucester native, I appreciated Bayliss description of the changing tides as they affected the creek on the south side of Little Harbor (Good Harbor) Beach but I am not sure the description would mean much to outsiders, particularly to those who could not picture the scene he describes it in detail. As incoming and outgoing tides changed the contours of the land and the transparency of the water, so the many shifts in the novel changed the outlines of the plot. In this sense, if one is looking for metaphors the creek and its waters could serve as a metaphor for the fluid nature of the novel, perhaps, not as explicit as the madeleine in Proust, but a metaphor nonetheless.

If the epic of Gilgamesh appeals to readers, I would recommend reading it as a whole rather than in the dispersed sections in the novel. Caleb uses the original as a source but adds ideas that came later in the history of civilization. His updated version is acceptable because it deals revealingly with the world in which many of us find ourselves, without all those bothersome gods who require perpetual sacrifice. If there is a parallel between this lesser story and the greater story of Caleb perhaps it can be found in librarian Gloria Cotton's observation that Caleb is Gilgamesh and Ibi Roy, his Viking Shepherd dog, is Engidu, the wild man Gilgamesh subdued and, came to love. After Engidu died Gilgamesh set off on his quest for immortality, only to find that his only immortality would be in the guise of legend.

I think that if the reader has the stamina to get to the end of Gloucestermas, Bayliss' pondurables, no matter how many avatars he uses to illustrate them, trouble most of humanity. (Is life more than "birth, copulation and death"?) I suspect Bayliss solution is a kind of oscillating pessimism, well to the shoreward side of despondency. He has no faith in God, yet God or Gods exist. He is comfortable being a Tudor (Episcopalian) because he likes liturgy, but he concedes liturgy has its roots in primitive rituals, dances and choral recitatives. I think, like bigoted George Borrow, he finds Roman Catholicism to be distasteful because of its "priest-craft" and he excludes traces of it in his novel, going so far as to place his characters in Mother's (Rocky) Neck when the greater number of tourists and Petrine residents in Dogwood are celebrating their quasi-religious festivities on Sacrum Square, the town landing, on the other side of the inner harbor..

Despite occasional touches of brilliance as in the playful analogy of a schooner to a battleship; in the casual exchange of pleasantries between Caleb and Lillian Cloud-Argo, his lady love of yesteryear, at the Starboard Gangway (Studio) without a kiss for Old Times' sake; in the vivid but all too brief description of the wrecking of the poorly-maintained 56-year old schooner Gloucesterman and the drowning of its helmsman Finn Macdane; and in the surprisingly lively dialogue between Caleb and Thalia, his godmother's daughter, in the final chapter. Gloucestermas is a circumlocutious and repetitious book that ends on a note of middle-age florescence. Caleb is 46 and Thalia is 45; not quite the mature fascination of Antony at 53 and Cleopatra at 39, but close enough.

Spencer Kaufman

When I signed on to the NHL, I promised to give 150% to the game. I’ve done that.

Little did I know, but they would ask more from me than merely my skill on the ice. The team wanted me to be their captain. It’s an honor, one I’ve done my best to fulfill. Although I can’t take all the credit, I was there to lead when we won the Stanley Cup.

I’m still at the helm now, when we’ve hit rock bottom. I know I have let my fears get in the way. I’ve let down the team, even if they don’t realize what I’ve done.

Now that the new season’s underway, I’m being called out. I deserve it. I can deal with that. It won’t be easy, but I’ll persevere.

What I can’t deal with is her.
She surprised me.
She came out of nowhere and blindsided me.

And there’s one serious issue.

Now that I have her, I refuse to let her go.

*This is a full-length, standalone novel. It is part of the Austin Arrows series, but can be read independently.

Spencer and Noelle...A Perfect Combination
By MRM
Nicole Edwards never disappoints me with her books!! I always know that whenever I open a Nicole Edwards' book I am going to get a well written story with complex and well developed characters who are surrounded by a loving and strong family, and that will grab me from page go...and Kaufman met the mark. I absolutely loved Kaufman!! Wow!! I did not think that I would love Kaufman more than I loved Rush, and I loved Rush, the first book in The Season series, but Kaufman completely and totally stole my heart!! I highly suggest reading Rush before reading Kaufman, even though it is a stand alone, but to really enjoy it you should read Rush first, plus, Rush is an excellent read!!

Kaufman, the second book in The Season series about hot, sexy, pure alpha male hockey players finding their happily ever afters, focuses on Spencer Kaufman, the Captain of the Austin Arrows, older brother of Ellie, and best friend to Heath Rush, and Noelle Dexter, Ellie Kaufman's best friend and co-owner of the Penalty Box, both of whom we met in Rush. We had hints of something going on between the Spencer and Noelle in Rush, but we were not really sure. Well, well, well...there was DEFINITELY something going on between these two...something incredibly funny and beautiful and completely unexpected, and I enjoyed every minute of their journey to their HEA. Spencer and Noelle have known each other forever, but have never thought of each other as more than brother and sister until the "Universe" gets involved [yeah, you will have to read Kaufman to understand that reference ;)].

Kaufman will not only have you rooting for Spencer and Noelle's HEA, but it will also tug on your heart strings. Kaufman is not only a love story, but it also deals with some very serious topics, and makes you think about the fact that what a person portrays to the outside world is not always what that person is dealing with on the inside, and that the internal feelings of a person have a much more profound impact on a person and his or her actions. I was deeply moved by the topics that were dealt with in Kaufman. Kaufman also will have you laughing so hard you mightn't be able to catch your breath, and yeah, that laughter is totally courtesy of Noelle. Noelle has to be one of my absolute all time favorite heroines. She is strong, funny, super cute, daring, quirky, and she does not take nonsense from anyone, not even Spencer. She is definitely the type of girl you want in your corner, because you know she will always be there to support you, no matter what, and she will put you in your place when you need that too. Noelle is the perfect match for Spencer. Spencer is used to women falling at feet just because he is Spencer, Captain of the Austin Arrows, and he is the sexy pretty boy of the team, and supremely alpha male!! Now it is time for him to put in some work if he wants to win Noelle's heart, and work he does. I absolutely love Spencer!! Wow!! He is an absolutely terrific hero. He maybe hockey royalty, but he constantly puts others before himself and he gives and loves with all that he is.

Bravo Nicole Edwards on this wonderfully crafted story that completely touched my heart and funny bone, and has now become one of my all time favorite stories of yours. I cannot wait for the next book in this series and whatever else you have planned for us readers.

The universe knows best!
By KindleKat64
This is a fantastic second book in this new series by Nicole Edwards! I just have to say that I adore Noelle! I actually think I have a girl crush on her!
It is very rare for me to absolutely love everything about the heroine in a romance book. Who knows, maybe it is actually because I am just jealous that she will get the HEA with our hero. Haha! Noelle is probably the quirkiest character I have encountered in a romance book before and THAT is exactly why I love her so much! Because let’s face it, we all have our quirks. She is a believer in the universe having a hand in her life and her relationships and is just a bundle of positive energy and you can't help but love her.
Enter Spencer Kaufman, captain of the Austin Arrows, super-hot, sexy hockey player. Except he is not new to Noelle, he is her best friend's brother and she has known him for 25 years. Something seems to have shifted though and now there is an intense attraction that cannot be ignored. It won’t be ignored!
Spencer has his eyes, heart and some other body parts 100% set on Noelle. I love, love, love this couple. They are sexy, flirty, funny and hot! They complete each other! So many feelings and emotions found a way through my system while reading this. I swooned (often) cried, laughed, winced, cheered and fanned myself quite a bit.
I positively LOVE this series. I really like how this story line runs parallel to Rush, Kingston & Ellie's story, so you gain a little more perspective into what was going on there.
I did not think I could get over Kingston Rush but then SPENCER.
Bring on Heath Rush!!!

Kaufman: The Season (Austin Arrows Book 2)
By Tanya
Well as per usual I LOVED Nicole Edwards books. I don’t think there is a book that she has written that I have been disappointed with.

Kaufman: The Season (Austin Arrows Book 2) is a sports romance. At first I was a little worried that it was a sports romance. Because if you know me you know that I don’t do sports anything. (although maybe I should) I am generally bored with watching sports. Well Kaufman may play sports and there is a little of him playing Hockey going up against another team. But, this book isn’t all about sports there is a story here.

This is Spencer Kaufman's and Noelle Dexter's story. I love that Kaufman is so human and gets super nervous when he has to deliver a speech. Whether for his team (he is the captain) or for charity he is a basket case. Now don’t get me wrong. Kaufman is an Alpha all the way where it counts. And, Noelle is aware and tries to help with his nervousness. She is very intuitive.

What I love about this series is that each of the books and this is only book two (I sure hope there is more) they are written to be standalones. But, if you love Nicole Edwards books you can’t read just one. So go back and read Rush: The Season (Austin Arrows #1) If you haven’t already read it!

I am loving this sports romance series. I know I just said I wasn’t sure but, this is a must read! "I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book." 5 STARS for Kaufman and I will also be purchasing this book. I believe in supporting our authors with verified reviews.
