About the Author
Farshid Moussavi is an internationally acclaimed architect and Professor in Practice of Architecture at Harvard University Graduate School of Design. She was previously co-founder of the London-based Foreign Office Architects (FOA). Moussavi has completed her first U.S. commission, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Cleveland (2012), its installation at the 13th Architecture Biennale in Venice (2012), and The Victoria Beckham Flagship Store in London (2014), and she is currently working on a wide range of prestigious international projects including residential complexes in the La D�fense district of Paris and in Montpellier, as well as a department store in Paris, France; and an office complex in the City of London, UK.

Nice presentation of some innovative architectural systems

In this graphic guide to building ornamentation in the twentieth century, Moussavi and Kubo have collected an interesting cross-section of architectural projects that demonstrate the mechanisms through which contemporary architecture connects itself to current culture.

Through the selected case study projects, the editors endeavor to illustrate the means through which ornamentation is the very essence of the building. Not being merely 'ornamental' and self-indulgent, the articulation presented is indeed the agent of the architect's ideas.

Various materials and effects are investigated ranging from 'dematerialized light' to 'relief patterns'. The impressive array of diagrams are extremely clear and useful. A typical system is defined through perspective views, sections, pattern diagrams, detailed assembly drawings and relevant notes.

Excellent and Elegant

This is not a technical manual as a couple reviewers seems to wish, nor a survey of ornament in architecture. Nor does it ever claim to be such--reviewers should review a book not wish it was a different book. Instead it represents the results of graduate level research at Harvard Graduate School of Design into a revitalized understanding of the role of ornament in architecture and how one employs technical and material means to produce architecture effects and phenomena. As such the book is extremely clear, useful and elegantly designed and thoughtfully organized. Great for students and professional who want to think.

Nicely put together

I guess, to me at least, the title of the book is bit misleading,
it should be "how to make an interesting building skins"
Because this book provides ample examples of great building skins of
contemporary (some past) architecture.

Graphics, analysis, and categorization are the 3 strong points of the book.
Each example is analyzed in the order of following:

1. elements (typically material)
2. key design concept
3. organization and assembly of key building skin
4. overall effect

For example, for Laban Dance Center by Herzog de Meuron, three different
colors and glasses are introduced, how they are used according to the program
inside, how the glasses are put together as double-layer enclosure, and
the daytime/ nighttime effects are analyzed.

The book speaks with graphics, limiting the number of words used.
The graphics were painstakingly achieved. Really delivering the message
clearly and concisely. Hence, essence of the project concept is easily
graspable, yet, at the same time, being graphics, it leaves room for
subjective interpretation.

A heart-felt manual that I am sure will become a classic must have for all wedding officiants!

I love that Sunny Dawn Johnston has put together this wonderful Officiant's Manual !! Sunny comes from the heart in anything she does and I am sure that this manual is full of great heartfelt wisdom to support someone planning a wedding. I took Sunny's nine month Mind Body and Soul Certification program which was transformational in my life. I went from an engineer to now teaching classes on Angels and Intuition, and just this past October I officiated my first wedding in Sedona. I know Sunny's support while I planned the wedding was fantastic so I am excited that others will now have access to her experience and wisdom! I plan on buying the hardcover book to put on my shelf next to her other books including my all-time favorite Invoking the Archangels!

Awesome !!! If you are thinking about officiating Weddings you definately need this book!

Sunny's book is a wonderful step by step process on creating a beautiful ceremony for the couple. There are a lot of different options and ceremonies that the couple can choose from to make their ceremony personal for them. This is a very clear and detailed guide not only for officiants that are new to performing ceremonies but also for officiants that may be looking for some non-traditional ceremonies to offer as well as the traditional ceremonies. I feel that this book is a brilliant guide to help the couple and the officiant plan a wedding together with grace and ease.

A Good Manual for Brides-to-Be

The step-by-step instructions are quite helpful. I give an A+ for the way the book was formatted. On the other hand, I feel the book fell short on delivering what the title suggested. I was drawn to the book because I was considering going into the wedding officiant business, so I was expecting more information about how to run a wedding officiant business. The book was filled with helpful information about conducting weddings, but I wanted to read more about the business side of being a wedding officiant. I wholeheartedly give this book a thumbs up for people who are planning a wedding. The information will help guide them toward determining what type of wedding to have and how to conduct that type of wedding.

A simple read that WILL help you fish better...

I purchased and read this book in preparation of being guided by Eric on the "Little J" river in Central PA. The book was a great read, and I'm glad I read it before spending 8 hours on the water with him. It was excellent preparation for what he was going too be showing me on the river and boy does his system work! No joking... Every time I handed my fly rod to Eric to have him demonstrate something for me, he caught a fish. Every single time! Never seen anything like it before.

Even if you're unable to get out on the water with Eric personally, get this book. His principles on tight line nymphing are amazing and really work.

As an aside, he's also convinced me to start tying my own leaders. Every reason I could come up with for using machine tapered leaders were tossed out the window once I tried one of his leaders. The formulas for his leaders are also included in the book.

Concise advice

This informative little book provides some great advice for all but the most experienced fly fishermen. The author concentrates largely on the importance of getting a good drift whether nymphing sub-surface or floating high and dry. He also covers tandem rigs and leader construction. The author resides in central Pennsylvania and guides on the fine trout streams of the region.

Good Common Sense Fly Fishing

I had heard Eric talk about fishing out in his area and how he thought these 7 lessons would help most fishers or are ones they tend to forget. He covers some great tips to looking at water and what trout are wanting for food, which is what most new fly fishers have trouble with. I think this could be a good book for new fly fishers who are getting more indepth to their sport. Not saying it is the best, but a good one.

Extremely impressed with this work, highly recommended.

There is very little -even after 60 plus years, material on the Imperial Japanese navy written by western authors. The ones I've seen are biased, repeat cliches, or are simply inaccurate. I know now that Mitsuo Fuchida's account of Japan's failure at the battle of Midway is largely questioned, even rejected in Japan but has been the basis for many books in the western world.

Hallelujah, this author does not make mistakes like that. He took the trouble of combing through thousands of microfiched archives taken directly from the Japanese at the end of the war. His knowledge of the Japanese language is definitely a plus as he explains more than once how subtle nuances in translation between Japanese and other languages can alter the meaning of the content. This was evident in the intelligence gathered by the Americans, as the author points out.

The book starts with an explanation on how militarism had dominated Japan's politics and how even Yamamoto risked assassination over his opposition to a war with the USA. You get a flavor on what it was like to be a naval cadet or officer in the pre-war imperial navy. Dull also points out some of the misconceptions and political mistakes that the US government made that may have contributed to Japan's decision to go to war. One of the key points in the book is the statement from Admiral Nagano to none other than the emperor stating that Japan must go to war, even though it is a war she very likely will lose but a nation not willing to fight for her survival is doomed anyway.

Dull also mentions that the Japanese had some knowledge of the US Navy 'rainbow' plan, a plan crafted in case of war against Japan, in that the basic strategy was the island-hoping that later became a reality.

Every major or even medium sized engagement or operation is covered, using the Japanese name for such. For example, the battle for Savo Island is known to the other side as the First Battle of Solomon Islands. The author paints the battles, by phase, extrapolating the Japanese interpretation as well as the opposing one, resulting in the most accurate assessment possible, as each side frequently misjudges the enemy's position and intentions or actions during the heat of combat.

The text is extremely readable, you cannot put this book down. There aren't many photos but they are not missed. Dull's style flows naturally, making his a very pleasant book, and the amount of information given is simply astounding. Book is over 400 pages, but I read it in less than 5 days, it is that good. I'm now on my second pass, discovering new facts that either escaped my grasp or simply forgot. This book is a keeper, and it should form the basis for many future books on the theme.

Thorough overview of the IJN

Paul Dull's work is shorter than Morison's compendium on the US Navy in WWII, but no less important. Published 30 after the war, it presents a tidy account of the IJN. Research from hundreds of reels of microfilm. Maps/illustrations suffer only from the technology used in 1978and the small size format of the book. Don't expect detailed discussion on doctrine or decisive battle. One can find other works that expand on any of the battles or campaigns.

Best read as an overview of the IJN in WWII. Later works may call some of the book into question, but that is the fate of any book that covers a topic for the first time in history: to suffer the slings and arrows of further study. Ditto Samuel Morrison's compendium on the US Navy in WWII.

I wanted to like THE BROKENHEARTED so much more than I did. Any book with ballerinas catches my attention. Add in a bionic heart, superheroes and villains, and I should have loved this.

But I didn’t.

Anthem is a girl from the good -- aka wealthy -- side of town. As the replacement daughter for her parents (the first drowned), she’s always done exactly what they wanted. Her dream is to be a ballerina, and she’s spent all of her life working towards that goal. She even has the most popular boy in school as her boyfriend. So, life should be perfect for Anthem. It can’t get any better in Bedlam City.

But when Anthem and her best friend sneak into a party in a bad area of town, she’s attracted to a South Side boy. A boy who makes her feel like her boyfriend doesn’t. A boy who she falls in lust/love with immediately. Within pages, Anthem’s slumming it, skipping ballet and lying to her parents to spend the afternoons with Gavin. I can understand Anthem being excited about someone so different from everyone she knows, but what I can’t get behind is Anthem falling in love so quickly, and being so devastated when something happens to Gavin. That relationship is an integral part of the book, since it pushes Anthem into a quest for vengeance, but I just didn’t buy it.

THE BROKENHEARTED also had zero worldbuilding. I have no idea if it’s set in the past, present, or future. I don’t know much about Bedlam City, other than I swear it’s Gotham City. As mentioned in the summary, Anthem dies, and her human heart is replaced with an experimental one by an illegal doctor. Other than giving her superpowers, her heart is barely mentioned, and I couldn’t believe dying didn’t have a bigger impact on Anthem. The pacing is off, too, and I really just wanted to skim to get to the end to see if things would improve. Unfortunately, the ending leaves things open for another book, and after doing some digging, I believe THE BROKENHEARTED is the first in a series.

With its premise, THE BROKENHEARTED should have been an amazing book. But for me, the execution was off, and I was left disappointed.

A good super hero-science fiction type book

I have to admit, the premise and cover for this is what drew me to it. I mean a ballerina with a bionic heart, how could I go wrong. It turned out to be a little different than I was expecting. Anthem is a young girl on her way to be a extraordinary ballerina, but soon finds herself in a whole new world and secrets to protect.

Anthem is from a wealthy family, a ballerina, she was also naive. I understand the need to break loose when she is giving some space, but she was very impulsive and didn't make the best decisions, but being sheltered by her parents didn't help with that. She suffers a tragic accident and dies and when she received her new mechanical heart she changed at least for the better, I did like her more than I did at first. She has new abilities, strength, and speed. The love interest, Gavin was the "bad boy" from the other side. I could see the appeal for Anthem, but not some of the decisions she made when it came to him.

The Brokenhearted has a fantastic premise, but sadly the execution just didn't do it for me. The first half was on the slow side, it does pick up about half way through, but with the issues I was already having, I had a hard time trying to immerse myself in Anthem's world. The relationship between Anthem and Gavin was an issue for me. Anthem didn't know him for very long, well she knew him for about a week and was "in love with him" and gave herself to him just as quickly. The problem other than how quickly she gave her virginity is the that she still had a boyfriend. So, the cheating was an issue for me. I would have really liked to have known how the bionic heart worked and why it made her the way she was, but I didn't get a lot of answers on that front. There was plenty of action in the second half and some hints as to who was behind some of the events that took place and it does set up the story with a big cliffhanger ending for another book. So, I'll guess we'll see.

While the first half didn't work for me, the second half was better and was an just okay read for me. I know there are some mixed reviews for this, but if you are a fan of super hero-science fiction type books, I think you'll enjoy it.

What I Liked:

Oh, how I wanted to like this book. I was excited to start it! Gorgeous cover, debut author, Harper title, science fiction genre... it sounded perfect for me! I tagged this novel under "dystopia" as well, but I think futuristic is a better word. This novel had the potential to be awesome, but for me, it fell a bit flat.

Anthem gets into the wrong kind of trouble really quickly in this novel. Right away, we can tell that she doesn't like her life as much as she would like to. She is no longer enamored with her boyfriend. She doesn't like the rich life - she feels disconnected from her parents. Things are perfect on the surface, but below the surface is a sad, lonely girl.

Then Anthem meets Gavin, and everything changes. She falls head over heels in love with him... and drama. Weeks pass, and they continue seeing each other. They get hot and heavy, and that same night, Gavin gets captured. And Anthem? Anthem falls to her death in a freezing cold river, but wakes up, alive.

With a new start and a bionic heart that beats ten beats per second, Anthem has a different purpose with her life. All she wants is revenge. Never mind the upcoming ballet, Giselle, and not getting the prima role. Never mind faking a relationship with her recent ex-boyfriend, who is blackmailing. Never mind losing her best friend. Everything, to Anthem, is about revenge. Kill Rose and her gang.

The story is unique, especially with the bionic heart aspect. I wasn't totally drawn into the plot, or the characters, but the story went by pretty quickly. Or maybe I was reading really quickly. But I wasn't all that impressed by the story.

What I Did Not Like:

I already said this, but I wasn't impressed by the plot or the story or whatever. It seemed kind of boring and superficial, and weird how all of that happened to Anthem. I mean, did that guy (if you read the book, you'll know what I mean) set her up? HOW? The author never explained, at the end, how that guy set up Anthem, and survived everything, and fabricated everything.

And by the way, I totally expected that. I totally expected that one person to come back and screw over everyone. That was sooo predictable. In fact, most of the plot was predictable, once you got past the part about her getting a bionic heart. After the major characters were introduced, then everything seemed easy to follow... and predict.

The characters are kind of blah, as well. I don't really care for Anthem. Her logic is pretty poor. I mean, you go out with a guy for a few weeks, and you're TOTALLY in love with him? He is SOOOO worth all that work? Really? NO. Irrational, illogical... stupid. Her decisions are just STUPID.

Oh, and the romance in general? Weird. There is a love triangle of a sort, but it's not an obvious one, with the two males bot actively trying to win over the female. But I didn't really like the romance. The one guy, I really like, but he seemed more of the friend-type. The other guy was on fire, and then, ice-cold. And the heroine was totally set on one guy, but she liked the other guy as well, even though she knew that the guy she really liked wasn't coming back to her.

Blehh, the romance.

I already said the plot was predictable, but seriously, the climax was anticlimactic, because you know it's coming, and you know what comes after that. And the ending. It's an ending, but it's not. I don't know if there will be more books to follow, but it seems like there should be more to it.

I just don't think this was the most impressive debut, or book, in general. Maybe I'm not being specific enough, but I really just didn't enjoy this book as much as I hoped I might have.

Would I Recommend It:

Not really, no. I'm actually impressed that I finished this one, given all the negative things. It seems heavy on the science fiction, but it really wasn't, which made me sad, because I love science fiction. I think the premise of this book was great, but the execution was not so great. But this could just be me!

Rating:

2 stars. Definitely not one of Harper's best titles, but I suppose I'm glad I got the chance to read this novel!

An expensive hodgepodge

Books about bioinformatics are as diverse as the field itself. It may not be possible to do justice to this new and exciting field in 168 pages. My concern with this book, however, lies not with the choice of topics, but rather with its incoherent presentation. Distracting parenthetical remarks pervade the text as in this excerpt from the beginning of the 3rd chapter: "DNA sequences are often found based on predictive tools, meaning that sequence similarities of newly discovered genes yield information about their physiological functions and structures, PCR (polymerase chain reaction), finding sequence fragments of significance (how is significance judged? By predictive biology, once again), finding distribution of genes or mRNAs (often an indicator of gene activity in an organism), and amplifying the amount of DNA for purification, sequencing, and mutational analysis." (p. 143).
Chapter 5 entitled "The Computer Revolution in Neurobiology" we find the following unexpected text: "One rationale for human cloning is that it could alleviate many of the problems associated with our unique characteristics. The genetic information (DNA) of a cloned organ is identical to that of the individual needing the organ. Hence, the cloned organ would be accepted by the individual's body as part of itself and would have a smaller probability of rejection." (p. 159). [Nevermind the enormous ethical implications!]
Throughout, one has the sense of a book rushed to market to take advantage of an exciting scientific trend. The book presents nothing that can't be found on-line and it gives readers no sense of the computational challenges of the field. ...

Solid starting place for a novice

I'm always looking for a good guide book for undergrads and biocomputing novices that covers the basics without getting carried away with algorithmic minutiae. I found this book a fair place to start for those who have no idea of what is out there. The tools and Web sites described are mainstays and likely won't be going anywhere. However, if you are already moderately knowledgeable, you will exhaust this book immediately. The nature of the field is constant movement toward newer and more thorough tools. This is not a users' guide: go to the referenced Web sites themselves to get the most up to date, accurate information.
I would refer a naive beginner to get this book at the library, but I wouldn't put it on my own shelf.

I own this title in my library and is well worth the money!

I am a novice in bioinformatics and have found this book to be invaluable in getting me started without intimidating me. I have owned the book for over a year and still find it very useful but I am waiting for an update to this title soon since I have enjoyed the organization of the book. It has given me a global picture of informatics and chapters with specific examples and applications. I am sure a second edition to this book will be well recieved by the audience and I am hoping to see it soon since the new bioinformatics book I have just purchased is not to my liking.
