Nice Little Survey
By Daniel L. Sweet
I call this series of books "Surveys". They give a quick overview on a variety of spiritual subjects-like "Coffee Table" books. Lots of illustrations and basic info. I actually got this one because of a Kabbalistic illustration of Adam Kadmon compared to the dimensions of Noah's Ark that I saw many years ago, but didn't see again. That's the thing-these nice little surveys can really turn a light on inside. The whole series is good.

Incredible, riveting play
By G. Schudel
This three-act drama, which weaves together the stories of a pregnant girl, a victim of the German concentration camps, and a juvenile delinquint, is one of the best plays I have ever read. Each character has a unique voice, each story is absolutely enthralling, and when the three come together for one night to share their secrets, the reader (or viewer) can hardly help being drawn in. If your looking to produce a play with a small cast, or just looking for a wonderful story full of realistic characters and psychological insight, look no further.

Lost but now found
By Laura A. R. Wingfield
My teacher in High School read this play to us, it was Clarence Williams III's big break out role leading to the Mod Squad. I loved the play and lent it to a friend under penalty of death if he didn't give me the book it was in back. Guess what, no book. So I went looking for the play and found this. I am glad to have just this play so I can read it again. It was a very 60's topic so it may well be dated, but it still was a powerful piece then and I suspect it holds up pretty well. I'm grateful to have found this item to replace the lost book.

Outstanding play
By WMJ
I actually had the previlage to play Randal in a production we did of this play. Randal's monologue of him telling how he killed his mother left a strong affect on me long after the play was over. I was amazed at how i was personally drawn into the entire play...I became Randal that night. If anyone is looking for a production to put on that will raise the awareness of young people in their society, this is it. I love the mix of character ahd how they are potrayed.

Many Are the Crimes: McCarthyism in America, by Ellen Schrecker

From an award-winning McCarthy scholar comes the first post-Cold War exploration of the anticommunist witch-hunt and its devastating impact. Tracing the way that a network of dedicated anticommunists created blacklists and destroyed organizations, this broadbased inquiry reveals the connections between McCarthyism's disparate elements in the belief that understanding its terrible mechanics can prevent a repetition. of photos.

Amazon.com Review
Ellen Schrecker's history of the American anticommunist movement provides a much-needed objective perspective on one of the most troubling periods in twentieth-century politics. While she refuses to excuse the flaws of the American Communist party or its individual members and leaders, she is also bluntly honest about the systematic persecution they experienced at the hands of conservatives--and more than a few liberals.

Schrecker reaches back in history to examine the roots of McCarthyism in the activity of Communists in the 1930s, as well as the response to that activity; not nearly enough people today recall that the House Committee on Un-American Activities, the forerunner to Sen. Joseph McCarthy's Army hearings, received its mandate back in 1938. She reveals the dishonest practices of McCarthy, J. Edgar Hoover, and other professional anticommunists, and how the media often played--wittingly or unwittingly--right into their hands. One Washington-based journalist of the time would later say, "McCarthy was a dream story. I wasn't off page one for four years."

But Schrecker commands attention most when she writes of the effects of the anticommunist movement on men and women like union activist Clinton Jencks, one of the first men to be prosecuted under the Taft-Hartley Act, and of its stifling effect of leftist politics, particularly within the civil rights movement. The longterm consequences of McCarthyism, especially its proof of the ease with which a democratic government can adopt methods of political repression, are felt in America to this day. Many Are the Crimes is not only excellent history, but a powerful cautionary tale that should be required reading for any participant in modern politics.

From Library Journal
Why did so many Americans collaborate with the domestic political repression of the late 1940s and 1950s, asks Schrecker (The Age of McCarthyism, St. Martin's, 1994), who argues that McCarthyism was far more than the antics of Wisconsin's Republican Senator Joseph McCarthy (1908-57). Schrecker exposes several McCarthyisms, identifying separate brands with separate agendas and ways of operating whose shared consensus on communism mediated their collaboration. Probing the many corners where McCarthyism prowled, she fingers a set of professional anti-Communists who deftly maneuvered federal officials under the guise of patriotism to adopt the indiscriminate crusade that treated dissent as disloyalty. Her focus is sharp and sweeping and her sources broad, ranging from the FBI, HUAC, NSA, and the KGB to the personal papers of various individuals. Schrecker's deft reconstruction of the longest wave of political repression in our history is recommended for all collections on U.S. history and politics.?Thomas Davis, Arizona State Univ., Tempe

From Kirkus Reviews
It is no easy task bringing new life to an era already as dissected as the McCarthy era, yet this is what Schrecker (History/Yeshiva Univ.; No Ivory Tower, 1986, etc.) accomplishes in a magnificent study of how and why McCarthyism happened and how its shadow still darkens our lives. McCarthyism, for the author, was no historical anomaly, nor was it the latest version of American populist anti-intellectualism, as the liberal explanation at the time would have it. It was, rather, a right-wing conspiracy, and a particularly effective one: the most widespread and longest lasting wave of political repression in American history. This disparate group of persons and organizations included, among others, ambitious politicians (think Nixon), the American Legion, former Communists, anti-union business leaders, Catholic trade-union activists, and (connecting and coordinating it all) Hoover and the FBI. Together, they were able to create and propagate an image of American Communists as not merely dissenters but as a dangerous monolithic presence whose very existence threatened the safety and security of the US. Convinced of American Communism's absolute evila stereotype based in part on the party's very real proclivities for secrecy, prevarication, and fealty to Moscowany repression could be seen as necessary. Most provocative is Schreckers analysis of the legacy of McCarthyism. Quite simply, she notes, ``McCarthyism destroyed the left.'' Organized labor was tamed, dissenting voices on foreign policy were silenced, scholarship was rendered obedient to the prevailing political winds, popular culture became vapid and monochromatic. But the deepest loss was of an American tradition in which activism and outrage were a vigorous part of the political culture. When a new left did emerge in the 1960s, it had no immediate predecessors to learn from, for a whole generation of activists had been lost. This is a marvelous and chilling work; it reminds us how easily democratic processes can be jettisoned in the name of national security. Excellent historical overview
By Derek Grimmell
This historical overview of McCarthyism covers much more than the late Senator's actions. It includes an overview of Communist activities in the United States, including the use of front groups to help Communists hide from public scrutiny; the origins of the established anticommunist movement before and during the Roosevelt administration; the various ways in which Communism was portrayed from the 1920's through the 1960's and beyond; ways that the Communists in America contributed to their own unpopularity and demise; the ways that the instruments of "political repression" developed and operated, including some interesting material on the development of the FBI; and the social, economic, and political consequences of McCarthyism for various people. Indeed, only one chapter is devoted to McCarthy himself, although it is a good chapter.

Someone who wants a sensationalized account of Joe McCarthy, pro or con, will be disappointed. Indeed, my impression is that Prof. Schrecker is not very interested in Joe McCarthy. She is interested in McCarthyism, the movement. Some of the negative reviews seem not to be aware of this fact. Some appear to be politically-motivated smears. Some appear not to have read the book.

Schrecker's work is a serious historical overview of the antecedents, processes, and consequences of McCarthyism, or the early Cold War Red Scare, written from the point of view of a scholar whose research has convinced her the anti-Communist movement attacked a danger that was already past. She does not say the danger never existed; the threat was contained between 1945 and 1950.

Any author who writes about McCarthyism must be insane, because the extremist nuts falling off both edges of their flat Earths will attack with everything they have. Thus, a three-star review calls this book "appallingly limited" and recommends various elements of the leftist press as sources. A one-star review charges that this book repeats the same old tired complaints against McCarthy, at a time when the Venona transcripts "prove" that he was right. It recommends elements of the right-wing press as sources.

Let's review the book instead of grinding an axe.

Prof. Schrecker is a historian, not an advocate. Her book rests on primary sources. She read the Venona transcripts, listened to the radio broadcasts of a blacklisted Texas humorist, read texts of House and Senate committee meetings, interviewed members of the Hollywood Ten, and so on. I doubt she has much interest in reading advocacy pieces from the left or the right, because she has read the primary sources herself, and doesn't need someone else to tell her what she saw or heard. I found that Schrecker summarized a lot of primary sources clearly and helped me understand how all the different aspects of American Communism and Anti-Communism fit together and moved over time.

The Venona decrypts are a bunnch of coded diplomatic cables sent between the USA and Moscow during WWII, which (for technical reasons) were able to be decrypted. Far from ignoring this primary source, as a right-wing review suggests, Schrecker has read them and weaves them into the larger story she tells. She also weaves in the anti-communist efforts of the late 1940's and declassified documents from the Soviet-era KGB to show that, by about 1950, all the ideological Communists in the Federal government had been eliminated. Thus, by the time McCarthy started his very public attacks on Communists in the government, the evidence suggests that the danger was past. Schrecker again functions as a historian and puts all these puzzle pieces together. Her interest lies partly in exploring the factors that kept anti-communism inflamed for so many years after the Communist menace had essentially been contained, and I gained some insights from her coverage.

And far from repeating the same tired ideas, Schrecker's opinion is that McCarthy himself was in no way a remarkable or bizarre figure. Instead, she portrays him as a more brawling and raucous version of several other congress members who held exactly the same views, but went about their political attacks in a more polished manner.

CONCLUSION: A solid, well-researched history book focusing on the McCarthyist movement, readable and in no way sensational or titillating. It will be of the greatest interest to people who want to understand this era accurately and objectively, and are willing to invest about 10 to 15 hours to gain such understanding. It probably will not interest people who are strongly pro- or anti-Joe McCarthy, or who are looking for an exciting or sensational read. John Earl Haynes's books are a good balance for this, as Haynes is also a good researcher and writer but concludes that Communists were more threatening than Schrecker believes.

PS: I have noted that there is a small cadre of dedicated drum-beaters who vote that a review is "not helpful" to them if it fails to agree with their political views. They write negative reviews of good books about McCarthy and anticommunism in order to drive down the average rating. No rock band has a more dedicated cadre of slavish groupies; no tyrant has a more dedicated cadre of hectoring foes.

In short, there is a small group of people who try to exert undue influence by "review-packing," and I assume they will vote that this review did not help them. Judge for yourself. I hope this review is as helpful as an amateur review can be: it's designed to describe who would and would not like this book so they will know whether to buy it.

Let's watch the votes and see what happens.

Authoritative Review Of Evidence Concerning McCarthyism!
By Barron Laycock
Given the recent spate of controversial conservative tomes claiming Joe McCarthy had been widely vilified and misunderstood, the act of finding this terrific book by former Harvard professor Ellen Schrecker at the Toadstool Bookstore in nearby Peterborough was an incredible coincidence. I was looking for an authoritative source of objective and dispassionate history of the McCarthy era that would comprehensively review the evidence and aid me in determining the relative merit of the conservative claims that Tail Gunner Joe had been right about the "commie menace" all along. I was fortunate indeed, for Professor Schrecker's carefully researched and scrupulously documented work offers the interested reader with an absorbing plethora of substantiated and objective information regarding what has to be considered one of the most inflammatory and controversial periods in 20th century American history.

Schrecker takes great pains at fairly and carefully detailing the specifics of the events transpiring in the rise of McCarthyism and its effects in the society, which it literally turned upside down. And while the author meticulously avoids becoming an apologist for the American Communist Party, carefully describing the rather sordid and troubling aspects of their political activities, she also shows how unfairly they were treated at the hands of McCarthy and the congregated conservative and liberal cabal that rose in the midst of the great Red Scare. Details regarding the degree to which individual communists were systematically persecuted are carefully documented and are far from representing mere anecdotal reports.

Moreover, she gives the reader a consummate history of the rise of McCarthyism, finding its origins in the communist movement, as it was struggling toward its greatest success amidst the misery and despair of the 1930s Depression. She also gives us some key insights into the inner mechanics of how the House Committee on Un-American Activities, also referred to as HUAC, laid the groundwork for the later hearings in the Senate by Joe McCarthy. She draws a convincing and quite detailed road map as to how the activities by parties to the search for communists within the government, including such desperate and disconnected entities as J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI, members of HUAC, and Joe McCarthy and his staff, independently used extra-legal means to pursue and harass innocent ordinary people who they found inconveniently laying in the path of their investigations.

Also extensively examined and criticized is the media, especially the print form by way of newspapers and magazines, so hungry for a never-ending news story that they consistently covered it on page one, providing the "legs" to the continuing story about the hunt for communists, and provided HUAC, McCarthy, and others with the public support they needed to persevere in their efforts. Yet it was in the damage that McCarthyism did both to innocent victims like union activists and other liberal politicians that Schrecker provides the most damning evidence for.

Conservatives cynically employed the Taft-Hartley Act and other suffocating political methods both to stifle opposition, on the one hand, and to effectively disarm liberal activism in general. According to Professor Schrecker, this had a devastating effect on the civil rights movement, which Hoover characterized as communist-inspired. Indeed, he continued to pursue activists like martin Luther King for decades, until King's death finally put a close to the surveillance.

Perhaps the most chilling conclusions one derives from the book are her observations regarding how damaging the McCarthy era was in terms of its chilling effect in inhibiting free and open debate by ordinary citizens, and in the way it so aptly demonstrated the remarkable ease with which the machinery of government can subvert and repress its citizens through the employment of political propaganda and cynical emotional manipulation. This is a wonderfully written book, and one that is quite thought provoking. Enjoy!

Comprehensive history of McCarthyism's Lesser-Known Victims
By A Customer
Many studies of the McCarthy period have focused on the "Big Names" such as the Hollywood Ten or Alger Hiss. Ellen Schrecker gives a sense of the broad swath cut by McCarthyism as it affected more ordinary people, who seldom made the headlines. Schrecker is the acknowledged authority on the period, particularly in regards to academe. Her new book presents new archival materials that have recently become available that shed new light on the era.

Pigeon, by Patrick Suskind

Set in Paris and attracting comparisons with Franz Kafka and Edgar Allan Poe, "The Pigeon" is Patrick Suskind's tense, disturbing follow-up to the bestselling Perfume. The novella tells the story of a day in the meticulously ordered life of bank security guard Jonathan Noel, who has been hiding from life since his wife left him for her Tunisian lover. When Jonathan opens his front door on a day he believes will be just like any other, he encounters not the desired empty hallway but an unwelcome, diabolical intruder...

From Publishers Weekly
Suskind's previous novel, Perfume, was a tough act to follow, so perhaps he deliberately curbed his aspirations for its successor. Where Perfume was a rich feast of language and vision, this slim novella is a light snack, a simple fable simply wrought. After a childhood marked by repeated abandonment, followed by years devoted to cultivating the lifestyle of an urban hermit, Parisian bank guard Jonathan Noel awakes one morning to find the titular bird outside the door of his rented one-room flat, the presence of which so unnerves him over the course of the day, that he finally goes to sleep vowing to commit suicide the next morning. Redemption comes at daybreak in the form of a rainstorm and the realization that, despite the sadness of his early years, he "cannot live without other people." Like the monster scent-stealer of Perfume, Noel is an extreme example of a social outcast, but despite a few nice toucheshe recognizes his first rush of adrenaline as something he has read abouthis characterization lacks the inventiveness of the former. The verbal flights of fancy that dazzled in Perfume are missing here, although that book's less interesting allegorical affinities remain. Readers with high hopes for The Pigeon will be disappointed; those who approach the book with limited expectations will be better suited to appreciate its modest rewards. 35,000 first printing; paperback rights to Pocket Books; BOMC and QPBC alternates.

From Library Journal
$14.95. f In Perfume ( LJ 10/15/86), his internationally acclaimed first novel, Suskind explores the obsessive inner world of a monster genius. In his new novella he paints a humorous if disquieting portrait of an ordinary man who is nevertheless as obsessive as Suskind's first protagonist. Jonathan Noel is a bank guard in Paris. Deeply traumatized by his childhood experiences during the German occupation of France, he strives with singular dedication to reduce his life to utter uneventfulness and monotony. The sudden appearance of a pigeon on his doorstep completely unhinges him, threatening to plunge his life into chaos. A fine translation of a masterfully crafted novella, essential for literature collections. Ulrike S. Rettig, Wellesley Coll., Wellesley, Mass.

A rewarding, subtle work.
By A. C. Walter
Imagine you are an old man so afraid of life that you have spent most of your years alone, living in a small room and working in an insignificant job as a security guard on the front steps of a bank, your only pleasure somehow derived from the monotony of your daily routine. Then one day a living creature, a pigeon, appears unexpectedly on your doorstep, and it shouldn't be there--it is out of place. And this frightens you like nothing has in many years. You flee your apartment (for good, you think). Because of your agitated state you break your own routines; you begin acting strangely, and your perceptions alter. This sets off a chain reaction of encounters in which you, despite your lifelong precautions to the contrary, begin interacting with a world that seems determined to drive you over the edge.
Suskind's "The Pigeon" is subtly meticulous in depicting its protagonist's complex psychological journey. The story is at once free of sentimentality, raw, honest, and yet life-affirming in the most vital sense. While it is reminiscent of Kafka and--most notably--of Knut Hamson's "Hunger," Suskind's novella also manages to glimpse something just around the corner, something almost out of sight, beyond the valley of despair.

Short and satisfying
By Steven Reynolds
The central achievement of Sskind's novella is the way it articulates the social anxiety of a man whose childhood fear of abandonment has played out as a lifetime of limited scope, controlling routines and self-imposed isolation. That might sound heavy but it isn't - mainly because Sskind wisely chooses the "free indirect" narrative style (mastered by Henry James). The story is told in the third person, but is nevertheless filtered through Jonathan Noel's gaze and consciousness so that external reality exists only as refracted in his mind. The result is that we see the world as he sees it, but without the unreliability that such a point of view entails. Sskind is thereby able to show us precisely what he wants us to see - both the horror and humour of Noel's experience - and to deliver a climax which remains somewhat objective and thereby inspires hope. Other reviewers seem to have found the ending cloying and unrealistic, but I think they're assuming more than Sskind suggests. Noel and his life are not utterly transformed at the end - he has an epiphany, he loses his fear, but it may or may not last.

Oh man, we need more from Suskind.
By steven
I had to get a copy of The Pigeon used after reading Perfume. I read it in one sitting. It's such a gem. I don't know how many pages go by where the main character is just standing in front of this bank thinking, not doing anything. It's riveting. He eats a meal towards the end of the book and I've never read such tasty descriptions of food. And rain, and peeing in the tub, and ripping your pants in public.
I'm going to have to do some searching to get my Patrick Suskind fix. This is one of the most satisfying books I've ever read. It left me on a high for a couple weeks. It's since worked it's way somewhere deep in me, I won't forget it.

America is rushing headlong into another election year, but something is wrong – the polls don’t match reality. It’s up to cybersecurity super sleuth Frank Adversego to find the Black Hats who are trying to hack the presidential election, and stop them before they do.

The action begins when a nameless government agency recruits Adversego to find out who’s manipulating the polls, but he soon learns that the voting results are at risk as well. From then on, it’s a race against time to see who will stop who as the presidential election – and Adversego’s life – hang in the balance.

In this latest Frank Adversego thriller, you’ll meet a scheming Native American casino manager, a scrum of presidential candidates too incredible to be believed anywhere outside of a real American election, a former Secretary of Defense who will stop at nothing, and an attractive French hitchhiker that Adversego rescues in the middle of a desert, and soon wishes he hadn’t.

The Lafayette Campaign provides a satirical take on American politics and our infatuation with technology that will make readers pause and wonder: could this really happen?

Democracy and technology in unique story telling
By Felipe Adan Lerma
Andrew Updegrove has crafted a unique story for my reading experience.

He seems to have combined the story telling of old fashioned novels with the grit of today's thrillers.

Extended exposition and narrative stretches of an older narrative style are bent, chewed, and swallowed by contemporary action and dialog scenes, mirroring the uneasy mesh of motifs about modern technology and the historic drive toward democratic voting.

It was difficult for me to discover why a thriller with as much exposition and narrative vs pure story-showing still intensely kept my interest, but Lafayette Campaign did just that. I looked forward to my bedtime reading time to see which character, what twist, whose concerns I would read about next in the series of changing point-of-view chapters.

I think that, besides being a contemporary story deeply complicit with today's media driven dollar-bought politics, the expository stretches are embedded and reflective of the characters. And thus, unusual for a thriller, the characters are more rounded than expected.

The process of thinking, evolving an argument, digging for computational solutions, is always colored by characters' emotions, is always part of the story.

As a result, the dialog and action, and even romance and comic scenes, come across that much more vividly. A good example is when we finally see Frank in action, playing the key game in the plot. I'm not a gamer, but this was exciting to experience.

Plus, there's more than the usual random rescuing events. One involves an online game which, to preserve the fun surprise, I'll say is at the very least not only plausible, but what might be called a logically-random possibility. In other words, things we know from the news and our own experiences that can happen, happen at times and moments in the plot that are, despite being surprising, fully believable.

Finally, in this second book featuring hero Adversego, romance purses its lips and tantalizes us with some authentic kisses. All I can say, for future works in this series, is: more more more! A calmer more mature hero is asking to be shown to the world, I think. I'm guessing, from the romantic meanderings in this book, Mr. Adversego will wish he was only still fighting cyber style terrorism (smiles).

This is a solid, fuller, more meandering - yet story linked, second book from Mr Updegrove. I fully expect more good things

Funny and thought provoking
By S. Bruisten
Being a fan of the "Alexandria Project" of Updegrove, I really enjoyed reading "The Lafayette Campaign" which is a worthy successor as Book 2. It is a cyber-thriller in the tradition of Tom Clancy and Dan Brown. Although the story seems to unfold in tried-and-tested thriller form, the plot keeps surprising the reader. Updegrove adds to the plot a funny satyrical view of the USA presidential election circus. It is easy to recognize the protagonists. It is even more fun to see that the reader can easily replace them by the current presidential candidate-hopefuls.

In "The Lafayette Campaign" our hero, Frank, is trying to write a book about the happenings described previously in the "Alexandria Project", which is an entertaining story line in itself. He finds out that writing a good story is hard and Frank is not all too unhappy when he is recruited to investigate possible manipulations of the polls.

As in the "Alexandria Project", Updegrove succeeds in explaining very clearly how easy it is to subvert and corrupt the everyday technology that we rely on. With perennial suspicions about electronic voting machines, "The Lafayette Campaign" is a thriller that will make us think again when we see the presidential candidates move up and down in the polls and any "surprises" in voting outcomes.

This book makes me hope that Book 3 will not take too long.

Wonderful Vacation Entertainment!
By Marcus Case
This is the second of Updegrove's superb technothrillers to come my way and I'm already waiting in line for the third. In 'The Lafayette Campaign' he brings his expert knowledge of cybersecurity to bear in the political field and offers his readers a terrific read that not only rivals but also complements his previous book, 'The Alexandria Project'. I felt 'The Lafayette Campaign' works at a gentler pace than its predecessor, bringing new dimensions to the narrative and enabling Updegrove's accomplished pen to cast its spell in different and fascinating ways. In particular, his skill in presenting sufficient detail of the States' electoral system to enable readers such as myself (I'm from the UK) to keep up with the plot without hindering the story's flow was most impressive. But in this respect much more was still to come, because his ability to convey with authority the complexity of computer systems and security issues is constantly evident as time and time again he weaves sophisticated detail into brief episodes of dialogue that never lose their natural vibrancy and easy readability. 'The Lafayette Campaign' is a substantial read with some great characterisation, memorable atmospheric scenes and enough twists and turns to make you giddy. It's a sequel to 'The Alexandria Project' but includes sufficient backstory to enable the titles to be read in any order. One thing's for sure; when one has been read the other will certainly follow. Wonderful vacation entertainment!

Question Your Thinking, Change The World: Quotations from Byron Katie, by Byron Katie

In this powerful book of quotations, Byron Katie talks about the most essential issues that face us all—love, sex, and relationships; health, sickness, and death; parents and children; work and money; and self-realization. The profound, lighthearted wisdom embodied within is not theoretical; it is absolutely authentic.

Not only will this book help you on many specific issues, but it will point you toward your own wisdom and will encourage you to question your own mind, using the four simple yet incredibly powerful questions of Katie’s process of self-inquiry, called The Work. Katie is a living example of the clear, all-embracing love that is our true identity. Because she has thoroughly questioned her own mind, her words shine with the joy of understanding.

“People used to ask me if I was enlightened,” she says, “and I would say, ‘I don’t know anything about that. I’m just someone who knows the difference between what hurts and what doesn’t.’ I’m someone who wants only what is. To meet as a friend each concept that arose turned out to be my freedom.”

Saves My Life Daily
By Karen Beth Glunz
Byron Katie's inquiry work saves my life daily. With 56,000 random, recycled, thoughts flowing through "the mind" each day, getting attached and playing out dramas can be enticing. This book is a size that I can carry in my purse and bring out with unexpected periods of waiting show up.
Each reference seems as if it has been written directly for me and about my life experience. I suspect others who read this can make a similar claim. The clarity of each reference flowers and gives me pause. Each tidbit of consciousness resonates deeply into my cells. Katie reminds me on each page that "the mind has no answers and the heart has no questions" a quote by Philip Golabuk, [...].

Taoist Byron Katie
By asterisk
I read a lot of Taoist and Buddhist books plus Krishnamurti. Byron Katie at first glance seems like another pop psychologist but these quotations are profound. They are not reassuring at all. They call for drastic action to clean up your story about the world, your relationships and especially the relationship you have with yourself. She says we don't know reality or who we are. We relate to ourselves and the world around us through the stories that we weave about ourselves and that is the only way we know. She asks us to drop the stories so we can finally see the world as it is. Not an easy thing to do when you've spent a whole lifetime weaving stories about you, your family, how the world is. We are very attached to our stories. They have become who we think we are.

Byron Katie's Work is all about the unraveling of your autobiography through her questioning technique. She focuses on NOW. Now is the only place where stories are not woven, there is only what is. For me, I don't want to let go of my own personal story, just yet but at least I am becoming more aware of just how much I am writing the world into existence.

Hermeneutics and the Human Sciences: Essays on Language, Action and Interpretation, by Paul Ricoeur

This is a collection in translation of essays by Paul Ricoeur which presents a comprehensive view of his philosophical hermeneutics, its relation to the views of his predecessors in the tradition and its consequences for the social sciences. The volume has three parts. The studies in the first part examine the history of hermeneutics, its central themes and the outstanding issues it has to confront. In Part II, Ricoeur's own current, constructive position is developed. A concept of the text is formulated as the implications of the theory are pursued into the domains of sociology, psychoanalysis and history. Many of the essays appear here in English for the first time; the editor's introduction brings out their background in Ricoeur's thought and the continuity of his concerns. The volume will be of great importance for those interested in hermeneutics and Ricoeur's contribution to it, and will demonstrate how much his approach offers to a number of disciplines.

Review
'The essays which John Thompson has assembled under the title Hermeneutics and the Human Sciences are all taken from Ricoeur's recent work ... The essays have been chosen with care, and the volume has the benefit of an extensive introduction by its editor. It offers a comprehensive and integrated conspectus of Ricoeur's ideas ... I do not think that anyone would fail to find illumination and challenge in reading him.' Anthony Giddens, The Times Literary Supplement

'Paul Ricoeur is the most important living representative of phenomenology in France. A prolific writer, his work has exerted considerable influence in several areas of philosophy, including the philosophy of religion, the study of symbolism, of metaphor and language ... Hermeneutics and the Human Sciences provides an excellent introduction to Ricoeur's work, which, by focusing on his more recent writings, will serve to inject his themes and perspectives into the mainstream of inquiry in sociological theory.' The Times Higher Education Supplement

'John B. Thompson's lucid and helpful introduction to this collection of essays includes a brief history of Ricoeur's career and the thematic focuses of his major works : This selection of essays makes available in one piece Ricoeur's attempt in the seventies to address the challenges from various intellectual fronts. These confrontations do not present an eclecticism, but rather, constitute a continuous, ongoing, and open intellectual response, addressing not only real philosophical issues dealing especially with interpretation, but issues relevant to the social sciences, psychology, psychoanalysis, theology, and many more disciplines.' Review of Metaphysics
