A Jurrasic View of this Book

This isn't so much a review of the quality of Mr. Burd's book. This is more a short narrative of how a programmatic dinosaur (at least this one) adapts to modern coding, and how books like those of Mr. Burd's might help. To summarize the stuff below: 1) this book attempts to teach Java and Android concurrently; 2) that's a lot of new and complicated stuff for a dinosaur to try to absorb at the same time, and 3) it might be easier to try to learn Java first (e.g., Java for Dummies, or something like it), then use this book to see how Java and Android work together.

(If you're younger than 50 don't bother to read the rest of this review; it's written in a foreign language.) I learned to program on a B5500 (which was, at the time, brand new). Fortran. I progressed, using the term loosely, to assembler, ALGOL, COBOL, c, Pascal, Univac, IBM, DEC, etc.. I admit all this only to establish without doubt that I am a dinosaur. Although I haven't done any programming in a long time, I recently decided to learn to write programs that run on my cell phone (i.e, apps!). I have a Samsung phone, and so I needed to learn Java and Android. Hence my interest in Mr. Burd's book.

The first problem was my misconception that I could learn this language/OS just like I learned the other ones. Wrongo. Java isn't Fortran (or even C++). Even people who wrote good structured code (remember that) will be thrown by the nature and degree of program structure imposed by Java (not to say that's bad, but it's very different). Second, the relationship between the language and the OS (Java and Android) is much more, for lack of a better word, intimate than anything that existed in the old days; it's just about impossible (and maybe meaningless) to tell where one ends and the other begins. In fact, one of the biggest problems I had with this book (or this learning process) was trying to distinguish between that which is Java and that which is Android so that I could then master them individually.

Put another way, I just about finished turning my brain into mush by trying to figure out how Java worked while at the same time trying to figure out how Android worked while at the same time trying to figure out how the two worked together. (Not to mention trying to figure out stuff like XML, Gradle, API levels, AVDs, packages, and the rest of the Android liturgy.)

So I put this book aside and bought Mr. Burd's "Java for Dummies". The clouds parted. Java, when dealt with more or less by itself, wasn't as foreign as I thought. Still different, but at least possible to understand. The big change in the learning environment was not having to figure out, for example, Android event handling (setOnClickListener blah blah blah) while trying to grasp of the fundamentals of Java. Then I came back to this book ("Android Application Development") and behold, things started to make sense.

Thus my recommendation: tackle Java by itself, using a book focused on Java, then deal with Android app development (using a book like this one). If you buy that approach, then you will understand why my only real criticism of this book is that Mr. Burd attempts the impossible when he attempts to teach Java and Android at the same time. That makes Mr. Burd's task really difficult (the impossible frequently is), particularly in the early parts of this book, and it deals out an unnecessarily difficult learning problem (at least for a dinosaur). Having said that, I enjoy Mr. Burd's style of writing and teaching, and I like the result I'm getting from using his books (now that I've figured out how to use them).

Not for Dummies

I'm just delving into this book, but so far I've found it very helpful. I've read and studied from a myriad of software books for classroom and my own education. I wanted to take an Android class this fall, but could not afford it. So, after reading the reviews I purchased Android Application Development All-in-One for Dummies.

Let's just say this about the Dummies aspect of this book - it's not for people who have no clue about how software works or how applications are developed. Indeed, I stumbled right out of the gate with the emulator setup. If anyone else is having this problem, let me point you away from Barry's recommendation of maybe needing to use an emulator and tell you emphatically you will need an emulator. BlueStacks works great. Just start BlueStacks before you start Android studio and it will be likely in your emulator list when you go to run the app.

Barry Burd walks a fine line between information overload and showing you how to get started. I'm really impressed with all the useful information. As a linear thinker I am working each step as I go along so I can understand everything about the big, bold world of app development and how apps work in the Android environment.

Edited to add that Bluestacks emulator works great for creating the beginner apps not targeted for specific devices. I'm sure as I get deeper into the book I will take Barry Burd's advice and install a more robust emulator, such as the one he recommended, Genymotion.

Absolutely, a Great book!

A great and surprisingly fun book. I've read a lot of Android development books over the years and this is a real gem in my opinion. Burd not only takes the time to walk the reader through some complex topics that other books either gloss over or ignore, but he makes the journey enjoyable and understandable.

He covers Java and all the Android basics of activities and life cycles, fragments, layouts, views, receivers, etc., and has one of the most complete descriptions of intent matching I've seen.

Unfortunately there are many average to poor Android books out there and a real beginner won't be able to learn much from them. This book is different though, and clearly superior to many, or even most, because the information is complete, useful, and as I mentioned, it's fun. Definitely recommended.

Note: another reviewer said that this book was not for "dummies", and he/she is right. These books are accessible to most, but Android development is a little strange when you begin (IMO), the OS and IDE (android studio) changes every few months or so, and having some object oriented development knowledge/skills would help anyone attempting it. Knowing Java is not an imperative, but would be helpful as it eases the burden of figuring out what's Android and what's Java when you're reviewing code.

Useful, readable fake book

As a professional musician, I use fake books a lot. I have many other fake books that represent the jazz/standards era. However, this is definitely the best - the Jazz Bible Series. Here's why: they print only 1 song per page, the type is larger than most, and whenever possible they print only 4 bars per line - makes it easier to read than most. They also don't clutter up the song with too many alternate chords (only a few when they represent a famous performer's changes). I highly recommend this and the Jazz Bible - Jazz of the 50's and the Jazz Bible - Early Jazz and Ragtime. (Don't be put off by the title indicating ragtime - there are a lot of great standards in that volume too).

200 very good songs: well indexed and edited

Large print makes this Book especially easy to read, and the songs are really representative of the era. Bios on the Composers are included, and good indices by both Song Title and Composer are provided. A good Foreword by DuBoff explains how the Book is made "user friendly", and has turned this into something you will take pleasure in playing instead of learning just the "original notes". Good Book! If you like Jazz from 1936-1947 you will really like this set. 1 Star off for non-Spiral Binding: that's the only reason.

Super fake book!

How come I can't give this 10 stars,that's what it deserves.At least for an old guy who loves the old standards.It is a good beginner to intermediate fake book,easy read,very little page turning to continue playing and not too hard chords.

The Bell Jar tells the story of a gifted young woman's mental breakdown beginning during a summer internship as a junior editor at a magazine in New York City in the early 1950s. The real Plath committed suicide in 1963 and left behind this scathingly sad, honest and perfectly-written book, which remains one of the best-told tales of a woman's descent into insanity.

A true classic

I personally find Sylvia Plath's journals her most interesting work, but this comes in at a close second. This book will challenge just about anyone who reads it, whether you're depressed or not. If you've never been depressed in the way Esther is, you're going to ask yourself why she torments herself for no reason and perhaps feel that the storyline is implausible. the deeper you go into the book, the less sympathy you'll feel for her. If you HAVE been as depressed as Esther gets, you'll feel challenged for another reason: the book will reach TOO far into your mind and make TOO deep a connection with you because, well, Sylvia Plath describes depression very well. Her writing tends to make you feel like you and no one else are experiencing what she's going through with her, and it's pretty disturbing. However, it's also a quite rewarding experience. A "bell jar" is just a very apt term for a distorted view of the world that presents everything as seemingly inherently bad. Esther lives under one all the time, and she's not truly aware of it. Eventually her life is turned into a constant waking nightmare because she can't even say what's wrong with her. It's painful to read but it makes for some damn good reading. Reading this book will give you a very graphic idea of what it's like to live under a bell jar and what happens to people who live in permanent ones. You probably won't be the same after you read it.

I read this book immediately following "Girl, Interrupted" by Susanna Kaysen. This was an interesting coincidence because both these novels are (nearly) autobiolgraphical accounts of mental traumas these women suffered in their early 20's. In fact, both women had resided in the same mental hospital during their recuperation. I finished "Girl, Interrupted" a bit confused on how I had ever rationalized spending my time reading such a book in the first place. The author's over-personification of the trite theme of "crazy may be sane" wasn't even accompanied by a plot. Sadly enough, the most interesting part of the novel was the excerpt taken from a psychology textbook describing Kaysen's diagnosis. Then, I picked up "The Bell Jar," not knowing what it was about, and read it. It was everything "Girl, Interrupted" had tried to be and wasn't. The main character's experiences were real and meaningful, and the book itself tried less to shock its readers by trying to include monumental meaning, but instead, simply told its tale in a beautiful and harrowing way that perfectly reverberated the all-too-familiar struggles of a young woman emerging into an unfamiliar world that in its simpleness, conveyed more than even Kaysen could ever fathom being bestowed upon a reader.

A GREAT Classic!

I've been trying to broaden my reading range by throwing in a few classics here and there. One I had been interested in for quite some time is The Bell Jar. And with the Sylvia Plath movie coming out soon, I thought reading this book might be a nice complement to that. And what a real pleasure it turned out to be!
The Bell Jar does not read like a classic - "classic" being the term of very old books with very old language - the description I've always had for the classic genre. This book has a very contemporary writing style, and despite it being written in the 1960s, The Bell Jar's topic of mental illness certainly transcends the generations and can be related by many people no matter when they read the book. I absolutely loved it!
The Bell Jar tells the story of a young Esther Greenwood at the beginning of her mental decline. She first recognizes its oncoming during a summer of interning at a magazine company in New York City. Trying to fit in with the other interns, as well as dealing with boys and co-workers prove to be a struggle at times for Esther. And later, when the real depression and suicidal thoughts set in, readers are invited into a dark and scary world, one created realistically and with honesty by Ms. Plath.
This book ranks high on my list of all-time favorites. I'm so glad I read it. From now on, if people want to read a classic (or a darn good book for that matter), I won't hesitate to suggest The Bell Jar. It's fantastic!

About the Author

H. Scott Fogler is the Vennema Professor of Chemical Engineering and Thurnau Professor at the University of Michigan, and a past president of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. He has chaired ASEE's Chemical Engineering Division and earned the Warren K. Lewis Award from AIChE for contributions to chemical engineering education and the 2010 Malcom E. Pruitt Award from the Council for Chemical Research. He is the author of the classic Elements of Chemical Reaction Engineering, Fourth Edition (Prentice Hall, 2006), and Essentials of Chemical Reaction Engineering (Prentice Hall, 2011).

In my work, I wanted to give new perspective to how we recognize and solve problems. This book is at the top of my list and included in the bibliography of the book I am finishing. We struggle with solving problems quickly in business, and many of the books I read include the same old structure: 1. Identify the problem 2. Decide if problem is worth solving 3. Look for root cause of problem 4. Suggest possible solutions to problem 5. Try solution 6. Validate solution worked or repeat steps 4-6.

It's not that this framework is wrong. It's just not enough. You must learn how to carefully take a problem apart, look at its smallest elements, and devise a real, workable solution. The Duncker Diagram, for example, examines how to improve a situation, but then balances it with how to make the current situation workable. I've never seen that before...smart stuff.

Fogler and LeBlanc's book goes far beyond the typical approaches to solving problems by teaching real methods that help you see and decompose a problem much better. This may be a college textbook for engineering students, but I don't care. I use it in my Agile and scenario influence practice constantly. I admire their work and would like to see it on Kindle so I can influence my clients to buy it. Highly recommended.

I really liked this text book and it broke down processes very well. I rented it for my class and really wish I would have been able to buy it because it is definitely handy to refer to for problem solving techniques.

I love this book. I took a class in college that used it (one of the author's was my professor). It is not a textbook, but not a novel. It is something in the middle with lots of real world examples.

Shrinkage and Warpage

The author covers systematically the subject of shrinkage and warpage of plastic parts made by injection molding. First he defines both and lists factors causing them. In the next part of the book, he deals with controlling mold and post-mold shrinkage and warpage in a great detail, including troubleshooting. Another important topic covered is the computer-aided analysis (CAA). The author discusses the capabilities and limitations of CAA and its applications as a tool for predicting what will happen in the mold and to the molding. A considerable attention is given to case studies using ample illustrations and thorough analysis. One full chapter contains data, such as tables, charts and figures for different polymers unfilled and filled, effects of various process parameters, pressure volume temperature (PVT) curves for several major plastics, general shrinkage characteristics and comparative mold shrinkage values for a great number of plastic materials. There are two appendices, one containing conversion factors and equivalents, the other listing abbreviations, acronyms and material names. Glossary, references and bibliography are also included. The book will be a valuable addition to the library of those, who design parts, molds and processes as well as of those who run the production.

very nice book for engineers

In japan, there are not books about warpage for injection molding.
So this book is very valuable for me.

This book uses simple expression,
But contents is comprehensive about warpage.

I enjoyed to read chapter 10 Case Studies
that is often occurred at my workplace.
I thought that even if countries are different,
the trouble and unexpected accident are the same.

But this is written by English, so I check 4 stars.
