The book is well written, researched and cited, an outstanding accomplishment. Highly recommended for anyone wondering why modern day 'Christian' churches are so dissimilar to Christs church of the New Testament and prior dispensations.

Makes you think

I almost gave it 3 stars but I didn't want to penalize the author for not dumbing down the information. Very interesting, a ton of info on the primitive Christian Church. I like to read Nibley on my Ipad so I can easily reference scriptures, people and words I don't know. not an easy read but so interesting.

The book is fine and all

The book is fine and all, but the labs that correspond with them are so slow and half of them don't work. Even my professor was amazed at how bad they were this year. Previously hadn't had problems with the labs, but maybe this year was different. just didn't work as intended on a lot of the labs.

About the Author
David Poole is Professor of Mathematics at Trent University, where he has been a faculty member since 1984. Dr. Poole has won numerous teaching awards: Trent University's Symons Award for Excellence in Teaching (the university's top teaching award), three merit awards for teaching excellence, a 2002 Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations Teaching Award (the top university teaching award in the province), a 2003 3M Teaching Fellowship (the top university teaching award in Canada, sponsored by 3M Canada Ltd.), a 2007 Leadership in Faculty Teaching Award from the province of Ontario, and the Canadian Mathematical Society's 2009 Excellence in Teaching Award. From 2002-2007, Dr. Poole was Trent University's Associate Dean (Teaching & Learning). His research interests include discrete mathematics, ring theory, and mathematics education. He received his B.Sc. from Acadia University in 1976 before earning his M.Sc. (1977) and Ph.D. (1984) from McMaster University. When he is not doing mathematics, David Poole enjoys hiking and cooking, and he is an avid film buff.

Great Book --- Don't Buy It

Dr. Poole writes a pretty nice book ... I am average in math and had no problems using this work for self-study ... I actually used his 2003 1st edition, which is 97% the same as this 4th edition. So save your money for important stuff like pizza and beer ... and buy an older version instead, or in response to the immoral pricing, download a torrent. My one star rating is not for content of this book but in response to the business practice of the publisher.

Identical to 3rd edition aside from one or two problems in each section having their numbers changed up.
It would be much cheaper for a student to get their hands on a copy of the older edition and just borrow the book from a library to copy down the problem sets.

Most frustrating book

I'm pretty sure the author of this book was laughing maniacally as he wrote the exercise problems. The examples given in the text all work out perfectly, while the homework problems are riddled with square roots and exponents that trip you up every single time. Not to mention you can never simplify it in just the right way to check with the back of the book, so you never know if you actually understand the concept or not because you can never check if you are right.

About the Author
Bernard Schutz has done research and teaching in general relativity and especially its applications in astronomy since 1970. He is the author of more than 200 publications, including Geometrical Methods of Mathematical Physics and Gravity from the Ground Up (both published by Cambridge University Press). Schutz currently specialises in gravitational wave research, studying the theory of potential sources and designing new methods for analysing the data from current and planned detectors. He is a member of most of the current large-scale gravitational wave projects: GEO600 (of which he is a PI), the LIGO Scientific Collaboration, and LISA. Schutz is a Director of the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics, also known as the Albert Einstein Institute (AEI), in Potsdam, Germany. He holds a part-time chair in Physics and Astronomy at Cardiff University, Wales, as well as honorary professorships at Potsdam and Hanover universities in Germany. Educated in the USA, he taught physics and astronomy for twenty years at Cardiff before moving to Germany in 1995 to the newly-founded AEI. In 1998 he founded the open-access online journal Living Reviews in Relativity. The Living Reviews family now includes six journals. In 2006 he was awarded the Amaldi Gold Medal of the Italian Society for Gravitation (SIGRAV), and in 2011 he received an honorary DSc from the University of Glasgow. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the Institute of Physics, an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, and a member of the Learned Society of Wales, the German Academy of Natural Sciences Leopoldina and the Royal Society of Arts and Sciences, Uppsala.

Good, but cumbersome notation

I struggled through this book more than I was okay with while learning GR. Originally, I thought it was that difficult of a topic. But upon learning much more about GR and having much more experience, I still find this book to be a cumbersome read. The author never decides if he wants to use modern coordinate free notation or old school component only notation. He constantly swaps back and forth and only ever half develops anything from modern notation. It left me VERY confused when first learning this topic. Upon coming back to check it out recently, I now understand why. He does an extremely poor job of developing the notations together and, much more often than not, he leaves you confused.

When the author teaches and strictly stays with old school notation, the book does a fantastic job. But when he tries to incorporate modern notation, it's confusing.

After finding the book "A Student's Guide to Vectors and Tensors," I find that this book is rather mediocre. Fleisch did a drastically better job at teaching you everything up to the Riemann tensor. It's not even comparable. If I were suggesting a path to learn GR, I would say Fleisch, Zee, Carroll, Wald.

Perfect for an "even handed" first course

This book is spot on perfect for a "first course" in general relativity (for an advanced undergraduate or graduate physics student). It does an excellent job of covering the basics in a comprehensive manner such that any advanced text or research paper should then be readable. Just be sure to read through the problem sections as thoroughly as the text, since they cover a lot of important material that would have made the text sections too cumbersome if included there (a lot of "Track 2" material is covered in the problems). Of course, additionally working several problems for each chapter is a must, because as usual, working problems is required to truly cement an understanding of any physics subject.

The book does an excellent job of blending both the "geometric" approach and the "component notation" approach to GR. Both are required for a comprehensive understanding of the subject, and Schutz adeptly explains and utilizes the relationships between both approaches while going through the material. Use of the equivalence principle is "sacrosanct" for a solid physical understanding of how gravitation works, as well as providing the "most straightforward" means of extending tensor formulation in special relativity (which Schutz presents in depth) to tensor formulation in curved spaces. Schutz does a beautiful job of utilizing the equivalence principle on both counts.

Of course, further reading will be required for a "complete education" in GR. The best understanding of how gravitation is "built" around use of the equivalence principle is Weinberg's book, as the book is indeed designed to demonstrate this. Weinberg's book may be the best "first book" for students requiring a solid "physical" approach to the subject (that's what worked for me, as opposed to the "pure geometry" approach favored by the math twits, hehe). MTW is the required "encyclopedic reference" that any practitioner in GR utilizes as an initial "look up" on anything, but it's way too "jumbled" to initially learn from it. Wald is a comprehensive textbook that covers the more advanced mathematical material and techniques required for practical GR based evaluation of most gravitational systems studied, but is not usually recommended as a "first course" on the subject (though it starts "from scratch"). Finally, any theorist attempting to develop new gravitational theory, will be "hamstrung" without first reading Will's book on experimental gravitation, which thoroughly presents the "theory of gravitational theories" (developed by the experimental gravitation community) by which any theory is ultimately judged (including GR). So all of these are required for an actual practitioner, but Schutz is the best comprehensive "first course" presenting an "even handed" approach to the subject.

This book had 4.5 stars when I bought it and was very excited for it, but it turned out to be just eh. The content this book tries to convey is what is in my opinion the strong suit. I liked how the math was presented, and got a general feel for things. But it does not present some topics in a lucid manner, and sometimes leaves important results in a mess of random calculuations, the problem being you won't even know whats important or not if you're a beginner. Example: the friedmann equations for cosmological evolution are never even given a name. They're just there. The book basically spits all this stuff at you with no motivation whatsoever. This book also lacks figures, sometimes the way schutz tries to describe things are impossible to understand, where a simple diagram would make things infinitely easier. The book omits many steps I found important in derivations as well, and after reading a chapter you'll often get the feeling like you haven't learned anything.

There are good things about this book though. Its got pretty good descriptions of the math. It let me get a feel for diff geometry in a reasonable amount of time, which I would say is pretty impressive.

I would recommend the book by hartle for physical intuition and lucid motivations and derivations. But yeah, hopefully with Robert Scott's students manual this book will be nicer to work with. DEFINATELY not for self study, don't even try.

Just so you guys know. I don't hate this book as much as I hated, for example, kittels solid state book. That thing was just an abomination. And its definitely not on griffiths e&m level. But somewhere in between. I would say its leaning more towards griffiths, and that said its not an awful book, but its just a shame cause it could be SO much better with some work. Oh, forgot to mention. TYPOS galore.

A Long Time Coming For Modern Poetry

Leonard Cohen's Book of Longing

Aside from being a creative genius in a multitude of artistic disciplines, Leonard Cohen is an old man. And with age comes wisdom. Take for example, this stanza from "Better."

better than art
is repulsive art
which demonstrates
better than scripture
the tiny measure
of your improvement

No dummy, this guy. But then, you knew that already.

Twenty years in the making, Book of Longing [Ecco/HarperCollins]was written on southern California's Mount Baldy and in Los Angeles, Montreal and Mumbai. The author of twelve books and seventeen albums of music, this collection of poems follows his highly acclaimed 1984 publication, Book of Mercy. Containing his own wonderful, playful and provocative line drawings, Book of Longing is a celebration of one of contemporary times' best and truest flesh-and-blood examples of unlimited artistic expression.

Leonard Cohen's poetry is loaded with Bukowski's truth and simple statements, but without the ugliness. There are tons of love poems, reflections on drinking and God (oops, I mean "G-d"--he's Jewish, you know), loneliness, philosophy, aging, friendships, food, sober highs, celebrations of the body and sex, sex, sex. But it's all done with manners--a classiness Bukowski never knew-- a masculine sensitivity that's never maudlin, and a ripe, heavy, juice-laden life that few words in print have ever had the strength to carry.

There are some moments when Cohen veers into classical meter and rhyme, but he pulls it off with the smart currency of the lyric, and yet somehow, even in the hipness, he can still manage to make the reader tear up:

And fragrant is the thought of you
The file on you complete
Except what we forgot to do
A thousand kisses deep

There is unresolved anger and hurt:

I could not kill
the way you kill
I could not hate
I tried, I failed

and

Fare thee well my nightingale
I lived but to be near you
Though you are singing somewhere still
I can no longer hear you

But mostly, in all its spiritual, physical and emotional forms, there is truth:

This is it
I'm not coming after you
I'm going to lie down for half an hour
This is it
I'm not going down
on your memory
I'm not rubbing my face in it anymore
I'm going to yawn
I'm going to stretch
I'm going to put a knitting needle
up my nose
and poke out my brain
I don't want to love you
for the rest of my life
I want your skin
to fall off my skin
I want my clamp
to release your clamp
I don't want to live
with this tongue hanging out
and another filthy song
in the place
of my baseball bat
This is it
I'm going to sleep now darling
Don't try to stop me

The New World Order
of wrinkles and bad breath
It's not going to be
like it was before

And when the reader gets to the last page, they know it can never be it. There is no choice but to turn back to the first page and start again.

I love this book

Leonard Cohen has been a BIG favorite of mine for 40-something years. His music is some of the most recorded stuff on the planet. Even if his voice is an acquired taste, other performer love his songs enough to make their own versions.

Cohen's poetry in this book is no different than his music -- great stuff. Some is exactly the same as his best lyrics, and some is changed to match the written word better. This book is a fantastic book of poetry.

The only person on the planet back in the 60/70's who wasn't blown away by Bob Dylan was Leonard Cohen. That's because his songs were better. Dylan's imagery was far out, ahead of it's time. Cohen's poetry though written for it's time, was also out ahead of it. I like Cohen's stuff more but Dylan is no slouch either. Anyhow if you like personal poetic conceit this book will do it.

even though I rarely see someone who is not already into LC being converted via this book, nonetheless its a joy to read. the melancholy, the cycisism, the humor, and the language. its a book that i have spent numerous winter nights enjoying. recommended.
