About the Author

Carol E. Catron, author and consultant, is former director of the Early Childhood Education Teacher Licensure Program and faculty member in the Department of Child and Family Studies at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She also is former director of the University of Tennessee Child Development Laboratories. She was born and raised in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, where she developed a special love and understanding for young children through her relationships with seven nieces and nephews. She graduated from Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky, with a bachelor's degree in elementary education. Her master's and doctoral degrees are in early childhood education from George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University. Prior to teaching and directing in university settings, she taught kindergarten in public and private schools, taught preschool in parent cooperative and university laboratory settings, and organized and directed the first preschool program in the Nashville, Tennessee, metropolitan school system.�With her sister, Barbara Catron Parks, Dr. Catron has published three storytelling books: Super Storytelling, Cooking Up a Story, and Celebrate with a Story.

Dr. Catron's areas of expertise are in play therapy, curriculum development, staff development and evaluation, and storytelling with young children. She also is involved in child advocacy efforts through professional organizations and agencies and has served as a mentor and validator for The National Association for the Education of Young Children's Academy of Early Childhood Programs.

Jan Allen is associate dean for PhD programs at Columbis University in New York City.��She was born and raised in Oakdale, Louisiana, graduated from Oakdale High School, and attended Louisiana Tech University. She graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University, Shawnee, Oklahoma. After working in Head Start from 1975 to 1977, she returned to school for a�master's degree (the University of Oklahoma) and a doctoral degree�(Purdue University) in child development to try and figure out what her Head Start children were trying to teach her abou how young children develop and learn.

Dr. Allen has been a faculty member at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, from 1982 to 2002 where she taught undergraduate and graduate classes in child development, early childhood education, and children and stress. There she conducted research on child care and policy, preschool�children's political socialization, and children and stress.�She also directed the University's College of Human Ecology's Child Care Resource and Referral Office, a clearinghouse for research, policy, parent education, and technical assistance and consulting. She�currently is conducting research and writing about the children, now in their 30s, that�she taught in Head Start and about their lives 25 years later.�

In 1993, Dr. Allen was chosen as one of UT's first two Chancellor's Teacher-Scholars at UTK; in 1997, she was appointed assistant dean of the UT's Graduate School. With her colleague Sky Huck, she directed the university's Graduate Teaching Assistant Mentoring Program: Developing Future Faculty as Teacher-Scholars, an initiative of research, training, and support�graduate students�in their instructional role at a research university. From 2002 to 2005, Dr. Allen was associate dean of the Graduate School at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, where she also taught undergraduate and graduate classes in child development. For the pat 10 years she has also conducted research about mentoring, ethics, and the responsible conduct of research.

Contributing Authors Bobbie Beckam is a preschool special-education teacher at the Ft. Craig School of Dynamic Learning in the Maryville (Tennessee) Public Schools and a former special-education coordinator in the University of Tennessee Child Development Laboratories.� She has a master of arts degree in speech pathology (University of Tennessee) and a certificate of clinical competence in speech-language pathology.� Kathy Carlson is a former coordinator of the preschool program in the University of Tennessee Child Development Laboratories.� She has a master of science degree in child and family studies (University of Tennessee).� Amy R. Kerlin is a parent advisor with Tennessee Infant Parent Services and a former coordinator of the toddler program in the Unviersity of Tennessee Child Development Laboratories.� She has a master of science degree in child development (Unviersity of Tennessee). Anne Miller Scott is early childhood education coordinator at the University of Tennessee; she previously was director of the Child Development Laboratories. Her master of science degree is in child and family studies (University of Tennessee).

Excellent For The Developmentally Focused Teacher

The key to play-based curriclums is to realize that you teach children developmentally, not acadmically like with direction instruction/teacher-directed teaching. It's a different, more liberating approach that most veteran teachers and principals may find disorienting.

Catron tackles early childhood curriculum from the get-go from a play perspective. the concepts of orchestrating play, realizing it occurs on a continuum, and realizing that play is the hallway to seeing a child's Zone of Proximal development appear in every chapter.

I would highly suggest it as an alternative book if you cannot get PLAY AT THE CENTER OF THE CURRICULUM.

An excellent book on FEM for graduates or professionals

The Finite Element Methodology though conceptually simple (eat the elephant by chopping it up into mouthfuls), becomes somewhat involved when applied, because the of tricks used to get solutions, after all you still may have to solve 100,000 PDEs to get your approximate solution to an otherwise intractable problem. So in its own way FEM can become a bit of a pachyderm itself.

This book is very good, but be aware that this book is aimed at graduate physical-science/engineering students. This means that you know how to solve basic second order differential equations and understand how to perform path integrals for example.

This book is aimed at people who would like to be able to write their own FEM solver. If you are looking to gain some backgrounding in how to construct finite element models using a program to solve problems, this book is probably much more than you need. You might want to try Schaum's Outline of Finite Element Analysis if this is your objective.

Beth Shriver received a degree in social work and psychology from the University of Nebraska. She worked as a caseworker for Boulder County Department of Social Services before starting a family. Beth's family live in Texas after moving from their first home in Colorado. She followed her passion and now writes fulltime.

Not your typical Amish fiction

Elsie Yoder and her family have lived in Texas for a year. They moved from Virginia to Texas after land got scarce in Virginia, and the young men in their community had problems finding land.Sadly though they weren't always accepted by the locals in Texas, and were even harassed To top things off Elsie's sister Katie had run away six months ago with Jake, someone that Elsie had held feelings for, so now she feels bitter and hurt. Gideon Lapp has always been interested in Elsie, but she feels she is tainted, can she learn to put her bitterness aside, and move on, and allow Gideon into her life?

After reading the first book in the Touch of Grace series and loving it, I couldn't wait to dive into "Grace Given" and all I can say is I wasn't disappointed As a fan of Amish fiction sometimes the storylines seem to run together, not so with "Grace Given." First of all it was interesting that they moved from Virginia to Texas, I thought the setting of Texas a bit unique, but it was the heckling and the threatening demeanor of the three Englisher men in the blue sports car in the prologue that gripped me making me wonder what sort of storyline the author had planned. From that first page I couldn't put the book down! I could easily understand Elsie's feelings of bitterness and hurt, as well as betrayal. The harassment that was woven into the story really set a different tone for this book, making it a standout story. Fans of Amish fiction will enjoy this story, but anyone who enjoys a story about faith,forgiveness, family, harassment and secrets kept will enjoy this one. If you have never read an "Amish" story I think you're going to find yourself pleasantly surprised with this one!

A different kind of Amish novel with a powerful message of Grace!

If you understand the Amish people at all, you know that they don't like conflict and will avoid all acts of vengeance or involving the police to deal with any issues they have. They are a peaceful people and prefer to let God deal out the judgements if laws are broken. However when a group of Amish people settle in Texas, a group of English teens are about to make sure they get the message that they are not wanted. Knowing that the Amish will not retaliate, they first come across Elsie and her sister Katie Yoder, walking home one day. They begin to verbally assault them with all kinds of derogatory comments and proceed to leer at them. Katie and Elsie both run for their farm and agree not to tell anyone about what just happened.

Yet once a lie begins it becomes harder and harder to keep it a secret. Now that Katie has left her family along with Jake, the boy Elsie had believed had feelings for her to live among the English. Elsie is left not only to deal with her hurt feelings of being betrayed by her sister and Jake and now has to face continued harassment from the group of English teens that have found an easy mark with Elsie. She finds solace in studying the Martyrs Mirror, an old book that takes about the persecution of the Amish people with her friend Gideon Lapp. Only Gideon wishes his friendship with Elsie may in fact turn into love at some point. However dealing with her heartache with Jake, puts those plans on the back burner and creates a door for Jake's brother Mose to enter with Elsie as they have a common ground for conversation.

In the second book of the Touch of Grace series by Beth Shriver, Grace Given teaches us all how to deal with situations in life that prove difficult. Whether it's a broken heart, a betrayal from a family member or even being harassed, the grace God provides never comes back empty handed. This was such a different Amish novel to read, in that dealing with the harassment from the English teens was something you often wonder about when the Amish community moves into a new location and can create animosity among the residents that live there especially when the Amish start new business opportunities that create a need for their products and services over the English ones. A well written novel that completely captivated me from start to finish and can't wait to read the next one, Healing Grace which the reader is given a glimpse into at the conclusion of this novel.

I received Grace Given by Beth Shriver compliments of Christian Fiction Blog Alliance and Realm Publishers for my honest review and have to rate this one a 5 out of 5 stars. The story was a lot different that your typical Amish novels and dealt with a lot of issues facing the world today in our own communities. It just shows how the Amish would likely have handled it with a touch of grace instead of retaliation like most would.

Book 2 of Grace Given is a continuation in the Touch of Grace series. A very heartwarming and beautiful book. Elsie Yoder is sill mourning over her sister Katie running away from home. Elsie withdraws from almost everyone. However there is still one person who can get through to Elsie and that is Gideon Lapp!!! Elsie has a bad memory- but has shared that memory with no one. Some young "englisher" men taunt and harrass the people in the Amish Community at one point even starting a fire and burning one man's crops. What does Elsie doe?? Does Elsie confide in Gideon- to what she has witnessed these young men doing or does Elsie keep it to herself?? Does Katie come back home- and is Katie now married to Jake???

I loved this book - definitely a five star book!!! Keep writing Beth Shriver- I love your books!!!

Don't Schedule Without It

I have a lot of MS project books and I have to say this has become my "go-to" book! This is also true for my co-workers, as they are using it too. We just moved from CA Clarity to MS Project 2013/PWA and there is a lot to learn. Some is very intuitive, where other things are not. Thankfully this book breaks it down and makes it so much easier to set your project schedules up for success!

An exellent, brief introduction to the issues of the singularity and AI more generally

This is an excellent, brief book. Unlike many books in this field, it gets right to the point as well as filling the newbie in on vital aspects of applicable technologies. The book is somewhat philosophical but looks at the whole space of AI up to and including the singularity. It does not take a strong stance on what is possible technologically but explores what the implications are if it turns out to be the case that AI is possible.

More than just buying a house

I was sent this book for Christmas since I had stayed in Tuscany and am interested in buying there. Wow! This book is like a Whole Earth Catalog for Italy. Beyond the details on how to buy a house, it's got material on living there in a way that puts you right in the middle. I loved how the author interspersed Italian words and phrases throughout the book and had various glossaries for buying a house and even gardening and dealing with builders doing renovations. I find that I can recall the words easily because of the way he put them in the context of how I would actually use them in conversation to get something I want. The wit and wisdom sidebar on Berlusconi is a real gem. His listing of things like Italian TV and radio, I mean, I can see myself living there, important in the actual determination to buy. Also, he's got Web Site addresses throughout for additional information like real estate agents by region. This is a terrific book that's fun to read and dip into. I recommend it, highly.

We bought a house in Cortona Italy 12 years ago only after a long hard search. IF ONLY we had Gordon Neale's book with us on that first trip hunting for the perfect house. His detailed knowledge of the intracacies of house buying law in Italy is infinite and we would have had fewer grey hairs if this book was available then
. Apart from that it is a wonderful guide from a very sympathetic student of the history, language and humanity of the Italian nation. In concise chapters he will give you the benefit of his long study and experience of the regions, their differences and special charms. The stuff this man has learned would take the casual visitor more than a life time to obtain. Here is his knowledge for you to savour at the cost of a paperback. This is not just a book for aspiring house buyers, it is an invaluable asset to anyone travelling in Italy. IF ONLY, we had had this book all those years ago, but we have it now and it brings even greater pleasure to our life Bella Italia
