About 5,000 children were imprisoned in the Kaunas Ghetto from 1941-1944, of whom some 250-300 were smuggled out of the ghetto, hidden by Gentiles and survived. This book is a collective memory of events that happened to Kaunas Jewry during the Nazi occupation of Lithuania. It contains 50 stories of people who suffered through the Holocaust in their childhood in Kaunas. Most of the contributors are writing about their ordeal for the first time, after more then 60 years of silence. The stories cover the background of the families before the war, life in the Ghetto, and the main tragic events that happened in Kaunas during three years of fascist regime in Lithuania. The memoirs describe how children were smuggled out of the Ghetto and their experiences and feelings living with the gentiles who sheltered them.

Smuggled in Potato Sacks: Fifty Stories of the Hidden Children of the Kaunas Ghetto -
How do I rate this - I love it ***** - is not appropriate
But it deserves all the stars - not for literary value - but for the heart-rending stories of real children who went through hell. We who live in an incredible era when we are spoilt with all the consumerist products & whose children and grand-children are even more spoilt - WE ALL need to be reminded about some of the incredibly harsh realities. Realities that took place just over half a century ago - and are no doubt still fresh in the minds of those who lived through those times of awful horrors. I recommend the book to all thinking and caring people ... lest we forget.

Heartbreaking but very real. - Especially after I had the chance to meet some of the survivors in Israel.

Unbelievable
By Rose
I have a very large collection of Holocaust literature. As an 8th grade teacher who teaches the Holocaust I'm always looking for good materials to use with my students about what life was like for teenagers during this time without resorting to Anne Frank. This book is excellent. Some of the stories are longer than others, some have more details...but all have the amazing sense of loss. I will use a few of these stories with my students in years to come.
